“The City of Durham (North Carolina) Stormwater & GIS Services Division performs water quality assessments and monitoring to satisfy requirements of the federal National Pollution Discharge Elimination System permit. The Stormwater & GIS Division has conducted surface water monitoring since the 1990s. Water quality monitoring is essential to characterize pollution problems, determine the effectiveness of treatment methods and determine trends.
The Stormwater & GIS Services Division of Public Works maintains an ambient surface water monitoring program that includes the analysis of samples from approximately 20 to 25 monitoring locations annually in the City of Durham and Durham County. These samples are analyzed for a range of water quality parameters, including nutrients, metals, and microbiological parameters. This program continues to evolve as the needs of the City evolve and state criteria change. The selected laboratory will support the ambient monitoring program by providing analyses of supplemental parameters for ambient samples collected monthly.”
