“Use of clinical decision support [CDS] solutions is now mandated by Federal law under the “Protecting Access to Medicare Act” (PAMA) bill. Beginning in January 2021, providers who order advanced imaging for their outpatients will be required to prove that they have consulted an approved appropriate use knowledge base when ordering as a prerequisite for the imaging provider to get reimbursed. As an approved system needs to be deployed by January 2020, most facilities likely have an implementation in process as of this time.
A prerequisite to a successful CDS deployment is in the creation of an effective quality program around appropriate ordering of high-end imaging studies. This includes the development of a well thought out communication plan to leadership and the provider community that establishes:
* goals for the entire enterprise and manages expectations
* methodology for collecting stakeholder feedback
With that, you create a process to optimize the user experience and develop a plan to expose the user community to analytics and benchmarking.”
