John Jones, Diaspora's another interesting option to consider. Your original fundamental premise still applies. Let everyone pursue their chosen avenue and then it work on building the linking infrastructure with WP afterwards. We're all waiting to see what LI is going to be able to do with LI groups. Time is against them. Rewriting LI Groups code won't be easy. It will be a long time before stable infrastructure sees the light of day. By then, it might already be too late, leaving LI with a new groups platform that few users will be willing to invest time in to make it successful. Just as LI transitioned Pulse into LI Publisher and reintegrated it into the main LI experience in 2017 but did not succeed in drawing back all the bloggers who had already left for other platforms. Jamie's team is making good progress. Over 6,000 unique alpha test participants so far. Global alpha coverage expected before the end of 2018. Transition to Beta some time in 2019 ( http://openworldcentral.org ).

It might be worth looking at. It seems to meet the goals we have all discussed.
