The legalization of cannabis or marijuana for therapeutic, clinical and recreational purposes in several states of the US, regions of Europe and some other parts of the world has paved the way for emergence of a new industry- the cannabis industry. Cannabis, also termed as marijuana, contains over 100 plant cannabinoids, which are biologically active compounds, and has been valued since ancient times for its psychoactive, medicinal, and fibrous properties. The complexity of cannabis drives the need for advanced analytical tests of cannabis-based products to ensure their efficacy and safety before they reach patients or general public for consumption. Companies selling cannabis-based products depend on cannabis testing laboratories to determine the quantity of cannabinoids such as delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) in their products, in addition to the identification of potentially harmful substances and organisms pertinent to human health. This has propelled the growth of a number of cannabis testing laboratories in the United States and other parts of the globe.

Cannabis testing laboratories face a number of operational challenges on a daily basis. This includes managing cannabis samples, keeping an account of each gram of sample, managing multi-analyte tests, maintaining a Chain of Custody (CoC) to document complete handling of each test by all technicians, and meeting regulatory guidelines. Managing large data sets using spreadsheets and paper-based methods is outdated, error-prone, and cannot meet fluctuating regulatory guidelines. A LIMS can increase efficiency of cannabis testing laboratories by automating complete laboratory workflows and managing operational needs, right from sample accessioning, as soon as a sample enters the laboratory, to generating test reports and certificate of analysis, besides helping laboratories follow regulatory guidelines such as ISO 17025, audit trail, GLP, 21 CFR part 11 seamlessly. Additionally, integration of analytical instruments with a LIMS ensures seamless data exchange and zero chances of manual errors.

CloudLIMS hosted a live complimentary webinar on “How to meet cannabis testing standards and regulatory requirements with LIMS”, presented by Mr. Stephen Goldman, Laboratory Director at PhytaTechSM CO LLC, Denver, Colorado, United States. This complimentary webinar delves into the current challenges of cannabis testing laboratories and how a LIMS plays an important role in effectively addressing these challenges. The webinar highlighted the market potential of the cannabis industry and role of LIMS in ensuring quality assurance and in meeting regulatory requirements. It also discussed how a LIMS improves laboratory efficiency and productivity at PhytaTechSM CO LLC via a case study. Additionally, the webinar highlighted how a cloud-based LIMS has numerous service advantages compared to a traditional on-premise LIMS.
