    Regency of Algiers knackered ref

    Missing notes

    I've added two notes to 2024 County Championship using the {{efn}} template, but these don't appear in the corresponding {{notelist}} (although they can be accessed inline). I've come across this issue before, a while ago, which someone fixed for me. However, I don't recall being told what had caused it. Many thanks to anyone who can assist!!

    Taking a break

    @ImperialAficionado: Wikipedia doesn't delete accounts, wether for inactivity or something else. Assuming you remember your login details, and that your account wasn't compromised and locked, you can always log back in. Victor Schmidt (talk) 12:10, 20 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

    The only circumstances I can think of where failing to reply would cause a problem for your account would be if you had done quite a lot of disruptive edits, and somebody was asking you to explain yourself or you would get reported and possibly blocked. But in any other case, no.
    What people sometimes do is put a message on their user page saying that they're on a break from Wikipedia - you can use Template:wikibreak or one of its family. But there is no requirement to do this. ColinFine (talk) 14:06, 20 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

    Article already exists

    I accidentally wrote an article in english and french, without realizing it already existed on 6 other wikipedias. How do i turn it from its own article to a translation of the existing one?     MallardTV, different language articles on the same subject are linked via Wikidata items. Where there are two Wikidata items for the same subject they can be merged, so I have done so. TSventon (talk) 16:42, 20 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
    I will note that there is no requirement for articles in different languages to be kept in sync. More to the point, articles in different languages are inherently independent. Even notability (i.e. that the article should exist at all, in a particular language) is independent, though of course, an editor might choose to create an article in a language for which it doesn't already exist based on a version that exists in another language, but this does not lessen the need to meet the requirements for the article it is translated to.
    What does concern me, at least a little bit, is that the English-language page overwrote a pre-existing redirect. In most cases, that would probably not be an issue. In this case, the target of the redirect was State flags of Mexico, and there may be an established "convention" on enwiki not to have separate articles for each state flag of Mexico.     I'm unclear as to why this article was declined. The subject is one of the few surviving WWII combat veterans with a storied military, academic and public service career. The sources are primary links to original material. Given the gaps in 20th century persona, particularly individuals with pre-internet biographical footprints, this seems a worthwhile addition to Wikipedia.

    [Edit Conflict] Briefly, in Wikipedia "Notable" doesn't mean "important" (which Kemble may well be) – it means roughly "has been written about by independent third parties at some length in several unconnected pieces published in Reliable sources."
    Wikipedia articles are supposed to be mostly summaries of the content of those secondary sources. Primary sources can be used to a limited extent to corroborate specific facts, but not to support Notability. "Independent" means unconnected to the subject: this excludes the subject's own words, interviews with the subject, and anyone with direct connections to the subject such as educators, family, friends, employers, employees, etc.
    I notice that you've deleted the entire submission panel with the 'Decline' by the (very experienced) reviewer Drmies and explanations by Drmies and Pbritti. You should not do this: apart from also removing the button for resubmitting the draft following improvements, it may be considered a deceitful concealment of the decline. I suggest you revert your deletion immediately [rendered unnecessary by RudolfRed's restoration].
    Note that "Decline" means "needs further improvement." If it were thought that the subject could not merit a Wikipedia article, it would instead have been "Rejected". Note also that I myself am not a reviewer, and have not double-checked Drmies' evaluation of so-far undemonstrated Notability and the primacy of too many sources, but I have no reason to doubt them.
    If you can find suitable sources as described above and in the linked Project pages, I'm sure that you'll be able to raise the Draft to Wikipedia's required Article standards, and that it will indeed become a worthwhile addition.     Where are the secondary sources that establish notability? I don't understand many of these references. There's a note about a 1978 mission, and the source is supposedly something by a Tara Shockley, but the citation is entirely unclear; it's cited as a magazine/newspaper, but "Lamar University Press" is obviously not the name of a publication, and this link--well, click on it. The only note that looks like a secondary source is this, "Marie, Cimarusti (July 2021). "A Salute to Charles Robert Kemble". Sandia Heights & High Desert Living: 4–7", but "Sandia Heights & High Desert Living" seems to be a community newsletter. Drmies (talk) 22:08, 20 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
    Kemble's noteworthiness seems related to Lamar University. That's an article that isn't all bad, but has much that's unreferenced or inherently omissible or both.     I am just a regular user of Wikipedia, i.e. I have no official role or any special authority. That said, before you get too involved in figuring out how to navigate the process of either creating a new article or making significant revisions to an existing article, I'm going to suggest you follow on right here at the Help Desk, looking over questions from others interested in acting as an editor.
    You will commonly see requests for how to go about creating a new article. Frequently, these requests will come from people who are acting on behalf of the subject of the article they are interested in. While this can be done (assuming the notability requirement is met), it often doesn't work out as hoped.
    In addition to looking at the requests currently posted and watching for new questions that come in, you could also look back in the "archived discussions" portion of the Help Desk archives (probably best to change the sorting order to sort by edit date). Reading over these questions might save you, from incorporating content that doesn't have a neutral point of view or from writing an article for which the subject does not meet the specific notability requirements imposed by Wikipedia. (Many people feel very confident that the subject of their article is notable and merits an article, they write an article, and then they're told that no, it doesn't meet these criteria.)     Actually, I'll say a bit more: if a Wikipedia editor has a duty to some outside authority that affects their Wikipedia editng, then they have a conflict of interest, and shoould declare that openly, and follow the guidance in the page I just linked to.

    Yes, requesting on the talk page is correct (it's perfectly fine, and encouraged, even if it's just a comma). You can place an edit request template in your request manually (list is at WP:MAKINGEREQ), or use the edit request wizard, which will do that automatically, in order to draw attention to the request.     In the UK, children are taught that commas like that (following a fronted adverbial phrase) are necessary. Every decent style guide I've ever read says that they're optional however - use them or don't, it's a stylistic choice.     I don't have any problem with the addition in this case. I've just seen situations where someone starts dropping punctuation bombs on FAs that have just been through a lengthy review because they disagree on the stylistic choices made by the authors and half-dozen reviewers. I typically use them myself when I'm writing, but if the only reason for adding a comma is because a fronted adverbial phrase and they must be followed by a comma, I would urge people not to bother.     @Admantine123: If you use {{Cite journal}} you MUST include the |journal= parameter. Temporarily I've changed the {{Cite journal}} to {{Citation}} to get rid of the red, but knowledgeable input is required to select the correct Cite XXX template.     Follow the doi link to the journal publisher and oddly enough you will find the journal title. In these two cases, someone thought it a good idea to concatenate the journal title onto the article title. Don't do that. Also, in both cases, the values assigned to |first= and |last= were swapped. Don't do that.
    Changing {{cite journal}} to {{citation}} just to rid yourself of a meddlesome error message does not serve the readers who consume our citations using the metadata. In this case, the missing |journal= causes {{citation}} to render a book-style reference and book-encoded metadata; both of which are wrong. Don't do that.

    Stable and shorter URL's

    Hello, I was wondering, and hoping, that Wikipedia has some sort of provision to shorten very long URLs Not long ago I tried using an online resource that shortens, and presumably stabilizes, incredibly long urls, but when I attempted to post this source, with the shorter URL in an article's Bibliography, a warning message resulted, in bold red letters, saying that this shortened url is blocked. Is this always the rule? Presently I am trying to list a book source, but its url is 360 (!) characters long, and is no doubt very unstable. I'm simply going to use the plain 'google book', with a practical url, (aprox 30 characters) and let the readers if they so chose to select the PDF file themselves This is the url in question

    Hello, Gwillhickers. Note that in most cases, a URL is not an essential part of a citation, but a convenience for the reader. The important content is the bibliographic information like title, author, publisher, date, page etc. If you have given all that information, then if the URL rots, it should be relatively easy to find a working version (assuming the book is available on the internet at all).     ColinFine — In passing I've lost count of the times where a reviewer has made an issue about not being able to link to the source in question, which is the only way to determine if the citation is accurate for any given statement(s).     @Gwillhickers: Url shorteners are disallowed in Wikipedia for good reasons. Do not use them even if you find one which isn't blacklisted yet. They do not stabilize links. They redirect to a fixed url. If that url stops working then the url shortener keeps redirecting to it anyway. Here are some of the disadvantages of using a url shortener:
    • The Wikipedia:Spam blacklist could be bypassed by linking to a redirect at a url shortener instead of a blacklisted site.
    • Special:Linksearch and other tools cannot be used to find links to a site if they go via a url shortener. If a website moves or reorganizes their url's, we often use such tools to locate and fix all links to the site, so our links would become less reliable with url shorteners. If a website closes, we can look for alternatives.
    • If the url shortener closes or is down then the link is dead and you cannot see where it was supposed to go even if the original target still works fine.
    • Readers cannot see where they will end up if they hover over a link before clicking it.
    • Readers may be tracked by a company running a url shortener.

    Problems with another user

    A user has labelled legitimate sources as "garbage propaganda", "left-wing", "dumb propaganda" and "absurd" I was wondering what the best course of action was? I have started a request for discussion for one of these issues on an article but under the block log they have previous for "Personal attacks or violations of the harassment policy" and I don't want to see a repeat.     LouisOrr27 — Yes, I've encountered such criticisms, from both the left and the right. Trying to claim that a source is not reliable simply by referring to it as "right wing", "left wing", extremist, exaggerated, etc, is only a superficial criticism. People closely connected to or having a strong feeling, negative or positve, about a subject may be unable to do so, and accordingly get reverted. Please use the talk page of the article in question to discuss edits, such as when they get reverted. If an editor represents the interests of a subject, they should WP:DISCLOSE their conflict of interest as instructed before they engage with the topic, whether it be editing the article or discussing it on the talk page or elsewhere.     Hello. You can see the usernames of the various people who have edited the article Haggerty Award by looking at its "history".
    Unfortunately for you, your question has had the unforeseen consequence of me examining the article and questioning whether it should be in Wikipedia at all. As far as I can see not a single one of the references is about "The Haggerty Award" as opposed to individual winners - and without such references, it does not meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability.
    To answer your question more directly: you are welcome to make suggestions for edits to the article using the edit request wizard. But in my opinion, anything you do other than finding a source where somebody wholly unconnected with the award has chosen to write at some depth about the award itself (not its winners) will be a waste of time.     I am trying to change my company (Metropolitan Oval)'s logo on the page from the incorrect red, low-res logo to a high-res correct logo that can be found at the top of the page here --> [1]. I keep getting an error message when editing the logo saying that Wikipedia can't verify that I own the logo. While I personally do not own the logo, I am in possession of a high-res correct version and feel that it is important to update it. Is there any work-around to this issue?     Hi Anthony42710. If the logo is essentially as the one currently being used with only minor changes (e.g changing the color from red to black), you can try just updating the current file clicking on "Update a new version of this file" at File:Met Oval Logo.png; however, the current file is uploaded as non-free content, which means it's use needs to comply with Wikipedia's non-free content use policy. There are ten non-free content use criteria and one of these criteria is criterion #3 which deals with things like file size and resolution. Wikipedia, in priciple, only allows low-resolution versions of non-free content to be uploaded as explained here. If you upload a new version of the logo that is too be or too high in resolution, someone (a WP:BOT or human editor) will re-size it and reduce it's resolution so that it complies with relevant policy. If the logo you want to upload is quite different than the one currently being used, you should probably upload it as a new file and you can request that someone do this for you at WP:FFU.
    Now, having posted that, it's quite possible that current logo is actually too simple to be eligible for copyright protection under US copyright law; so, if the new version you want to upload is also essentially the same, then it too would most likely be too simple for copyright protection. In such a case, the new version should be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons instead of Wikipedia because Commons is better suited to host such content. You might want first ask about this c:Commons:Village pump/Copyright just to see what some others think. If the prevailing opinion is that the new version is too simple, you can upload it using c:Commons:Upload under a copyright license of c:Template:PD-logo.
    Finally, since you've stated you're an employee of Metropolitan Oval, you should carefully read through Wikipedia:Conflict of interest and Wikipedia:Paid-contribution disclosure before trying to make any edits to any content about the company on Wikipedia. Your connection to the company doesn't matter so much to Commons, but it does matter quite a bit to Wikipedia and there are some limitations as to what you can do.     Hello. Every different language version of Wikipedia is an independent project, with its own rules and procedures. Articles on the same subject in different languages can be straight translations - but only if they meet the policies of both language versions. Sometimes they start as straight translations, but get edited independently; sometimes they are created completely indpendently of one another.
    If you have written an article in az-wiki, you are welcome to translate it into English for en-wiki. But en-wiki's policies are stricter than many others, and you may find that the subject is acceptable in az-wiki, but does not meet en-wiki's criteria for notability: it depends on the quality of the sources.

    Yes, but I suggest you don't create drafts in multiple languages in the same Wikipedia: as far as I know, there are no tools to move a page from one Wikipedia to another, so it would be much better to create each your user pages of that language Wikipedia. In English Wikipedia, you can have as many user subpages (or personal sandboxes) as you want. I'm guessing that you can do that in any other Wikipedia as well.     Most photos on Wikipedia are under a license that allows for reuse for any purpose if attribution is given. You can click on the photo to see the exact license terms. Some photos are used under non-free use, which means there is no right to reuse the photos. For photos in that case, you would need to contact the copyright holder directly for permission.     When citing a source in a foreign language, do I have to translate the quote being cited, or leave it in in its original language?

    For example, I want to cite this article about the Consulate.

    Citations tool

    At the bottom of a page I am editing, underneath the edit description, all the way to the right of the blue Publish changes button, I have a button that says ☑️ Citations. I think it might be from a script I installed, but I'm not sure. In any case, when it is working, it can take text such as

    * {{ cite book | isbn=978-1556196027}}

    and fill in most of the other fields associated with that ISBN. Often, however, it just errors, and I can't figure out what the issue is. At least once it failed one night and then worked on exactly the same text the next morning. So maybe it's just really glitchy on their end?

    The text I get when it isn't working just says "Error: citations request failed".

    Why doesn't my ref/note work as a clickable link?

    Following the "ref"/"note" markup example as closely as I could, and it is only a clickable link in one direction, in both Safari and Chrome. Clicking "Note 1" where it occurs in the body (Adverse Events) does not work, although it appears blue. Clicking the "1" in the notes section at the bottom does indeed work, it provides a backlink to the body.

    What have I done wrong? Very similar markup works on another page I recently annotated.

      Fixed I've sorted it out for you. The easiest way to deal with footnotes is to use the {{efn}} mechanism. You place the whole footnoted (including references) inline:"* Dyspepsia, stomach discomfort, and/or vomiting{{efn|The Phase III trials ... subjects.<ref name=DM />}}" then at the bottom in the "Notes" section add {{notelist}}.     Archiving

    Hi, the archiving on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Edit requests was originally broken due to an erroneous configuration that caused the bot to start archiving at archive 6. I've reset the counter back to 1 and moved the archive, but now Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Edit requests/Archive 6 is a redirect to the first archive from the page move. Will this cause trouble when the number of archives eventually reaches 6, or will the bot just overwrite the redirect?     The first problem here is WP:BOSS, as you should not edit an article if you are involved with it in some way. The other problem is that the edits at Envac Automated Waste Collection System were deleted because they appear to have copypasted copyrighted material into the article, which is also one of the things not to do in a Wikipedia article.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 12:17, 23 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

    The other thing to realise, Nina, is that Wikipedia has little interest in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is almost entirely interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. If enough material is cited from independent sources to establish notability, a limited amount of uncontroversial factual information may be added from non-independent sources.
    If the material you added was from the company's website, it is likely that very little of it would be appropriate for a Wikipedia article even without the question of copyright. ColinFine (talk) 15:55, 23 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

    @Bvedavyas2024, the section Early life and education has no references - where did you get this information? Two of the sections under Political Career have no references, and many parts of the other sections have no references attached. Many of the items in Political Positions Held are missing references. And language such as this is inappropriate for an encyclopedia: Renowned for his transformative leadership in Krishna District, Vedavyas unwavering commitment to his constituents and notable achievements define him as a true statesman and inspirational figure. He is fondly known as Ajathashatru of Andhra Politics.

    Dan Schneider, who is Jewish

    I googled “Sam and Cat” a Nickelodeon kids show, and in the Wikipedia entry on the initial google search it includes the reference to the producer Dan Schneider “who is Jewish”.     (edit conflict) It's not Google's fault. It was in the article for 52 minutes Sunday.[3] Googlebot apparently visited the page there and cached the content. It will disappear from Google results next time their bot visits. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:52, 23 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
