"Minor" edits

Please read WP:minor edit. You tagged all of your edits to Edwin Poots as minor, but none were. "Minor" means a trivial change to spelling, word order or grammar that has no appreciable effect on meaning. Size does not matter: a one-letter change from "now" to "not" (or vice versa) would definitely not qualify as "minor". 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 14:36, 15 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Tips
  • Don't be afraid to edit! Just find something that can be improved and make it better. Other editors will help fix any mistakes you make.
  • It's normal to feel a little overwhelmed, but don't worry if you don't understand everything at first—it's fine to edit using common sense.
  • If an edit you make is reverted, you can discuss the issue at the article's talk page. Be civil, and don't restore the edit unless there is consensus.
  • Always use edit summaries to explain your changes.
  • When adding new content to an article, always include a citation to a reliable source.
  • If you wish to edit about a subject with which you are affiliated, read our conflict of interest guide and disclose your connection.
  • Have fun! Your presence in the Wikipedia community is welcome.

Happy editing! Cheers, 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 14:40, 15 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia and copyright

Control copyright icon Hello WorldTravleerAndPhotoTaker! Your additions to Johannes van Damme have been removed in whole or in part, as they appear to have added copyrighted content without evidence that the source material is in the public domain or has been released by its owner or legal agent under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. (To request such a release, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission.) While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • We have strict guidelines on the usage of copyrighted images. Fair use images must meet all ten of the non-free content criteria in order to be used in articles, or they will be deleted. To be used on Wikipedia, all other images must be made available under a free and open copyright license that allows commercial and derivative reuse.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into either the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Please see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps described at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. See also Help:Translation#License requirements.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, please ask them here on this page, or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 00:08, 24 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

hi there, seeing as that entire section has now been removed, could i kindly request that you please remove any "strikes" against my account ? I will endeavor not to offend any rules regarding copyright in the future, i always paraphrase anything i want to add in my own words from newspapaer articles anyway, i would never cut & paste a section unless it is a publicly available quote & there is not other way to communicate it effectively ... happy New Year !! Mohamed Isnin Saleh

Hi, I notice your rather new here, but I have been severely critical of the purported biography of Mohamed Isnin Saleh that you recently contributed. I am not sure what you are trying to write about, but the contribution you have made is definitely not written like a biography. When writing about criminals, they are often only notable for the crimes they commit. In cases where a person is notable for only one event, the general rule is to cover the event, not the person. Had this article been titled as being about the 2003 drug raid in which Isnin and his compatriots were arrested, then it would have been reasonably good start, but as a biography, it just doesn't work for me. To understand what I am driving at, you might find it helpful to read what some other Wikipedans say about contributing content to Wikipedia, writing biographies, and notability. Last, but not least, I invite you to discuss my comments with the aim of improving the article in question. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 23:10, 17 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

hi there ! i wads trying to keep to the format of other Capital_punishment_in_Singapore#Drug_trafficking_cases, such as Johannes van Damme, where the bullet point entry is the offenders name but the content of the article is the circumstances of the crime and the ensuing trial / execution. I suppose we could change the title to "2001 Cascadale Condominium Heroin Seizure", but I am sure that would ring just as few bells with readers as "Mohamed Isnin Saleh" would. Also, looking at other articles such as Chijioke Stephen Obioha and Norasharee Gous there is very little written about their Background but alot about the crime / trial. I am not sure what I could do to improve this article to your satisfaction apart from changing the title, I only wrote it and several similar ones to help publicize various cases of people executed for narcotics by the Singaporean government, as information is very hard to find online for most of them. WorldTravleerAndPhotoTaker (talk) 08:38, 18 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
As I pointed out initially, criminals, are often only notable for the crimes they commit. That means the general rule is to cover the event, not the person, because it is much easier to find information on-line about the events, compared to the person. If you look at the 3 biographic article you have cited as exemplars, you will notice that they all have numerous sources that provide background information about these people. If you are having a great deal of difficulty finding on-line sources about a person, then that is a good indication that the person is a low profile individual, and is probably not going to be notable enough to warrant their own Wikipedia entry. Please be aware that while Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, it is not the place to help publicize the case of every person executed for drug trafficking. Also, an article about the "2001 Cascadale Condominium heroin seizure" is probably best first included as a small section in an, as yet unwritten, article about "Drug Trafficking in Singapore", or a related article. You need to have articles that refer to any article you might write in place first, because these are going to be places where you can mention the seizure and summarize its importance before attempting to write a more comprehensive article about the seizure, itself. If you read the essay about writing an article first, you will notice that the recommended practice is to create an article before linking it to another article, and avoid having red links in articles. However, the list of Drug trafficking cases in the article about Capital punishment in Singapore, doesn't follow that advice and is full of red links as a result. There is probably a very good reason that articles have not been written about these people, yet, which is likely because it is difficult to find enough sources to write about those individuals as they are not notable. So, this might not be the best article to use as a starting point for creating a new Wikipedia article. All the red links in the article are likely to be otherwise non-notable criminals who are only notable for being executed. An article about one of these people should probably be called Execution of .... or something similar, because you do not have enough information about their full life to write a full Biography; only enough to write about the circumstances of their execution. I suspect that this is the article you have really written about in the case of Mohamed Isnin Saleh and his associates - in reality it is about the executions of 3 people for a single joint crime. In some respects, the exercise of writing for Wikipedia is not about finding a red link in an existing article and writing about the topic suggested, rather it is about first finding, and then writing about, a new topic or subject that Wikipedia doesn't yet cover, for example "Drug trafficking in Singapore", or expanding an existing article that might be an overview subject, like Organised crime in Singapore, (which does not cover drug trafficking at the moment), or Crime in Singapore, (which only mentions penalties for drug trafficking), and then improving it. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 12:26, 20 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
hi there, thank you for taking the time to write a comprehensive reply that clearly explains the rules ! digesting your advice, i dont think there is much I can do to improve the articles i have written, as there is close to zero info about the subjects the cover online and i had to dig deep into archived newspapers to find out about them. This yielded mostly court reports and not a huge amount about their back ground. Even where i did find background info, like with Angel Mou Pui Peng this has been rejected as not notable, which is fair enough as i dont make the rules ... however i will highlight that there are countless other articles about other people who could be deemed not notable, such as Charles Brooks Jr. , that have been on Wikipedia for many years without issue WorldTravleerAndPhotoTaker (talk) 08:22, 24 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Duncan McKenzie (murderer) is another example WorldTravleerAndPhotoTaker (talk) 08:31, 24 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@WorldTravleerAndPhotoTaker: What is notable about both the Charles Brooks Jr. and Duncan McKenzie (murderer) articles are the number of citations about these individuals, 10 and 12, respectively, and that their executions are considered firsts after various US Supreme Court decisions. Because these people spend a great deal of time on Death Row in the United States, they have time to acquire a degree of notoriety in the news media, which make them notable by a consensus agreement among Wikipedians. This sort of languishing on Death Row doesn't appear to happen with Singaporeans who are executed, so they have no time to go through a similar process. What is notable is that Singapore does execute a lot of drug traffickers, so a list of their names is suitable for an article. But because the process is much swifter and far less publicized by the news media, there are far fewer independent sources to use to create a stand-alone article about an executed person, let alone a substantial one. In such situations, you are far better off writing about the crimes that these people feature in, rather than the individuals themselves. In the case of Mohamed Isnin Saleh and his associates, you could write, word for word, almost the same article about each of his associates, apart from changing the name in the title, and first sentence. In this sort of situation, it is the crime that has been committed that is much more notable that the individual people executed for it. Whether that crime merits its own article is a different question. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 21:03, 24 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Please consider contributing to the discussion about the deletion of the Mohamed Isnin Saleh article. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 03:07, 25 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
thank you again for your advice ... how about i create a page "Drug Trafficking in Singapore" and add in each of the offending articles as paragraphs, would that work ? something like this:
==================================
opening paragraph
the brief history is blah blah
can be split into 2: local dealers and drug mules caught at airport
notable local drug busts
bust a
arrest of offender
trail
verdict and sentence
notable drug mules
person a
arrest
trail
verdict and sentence
person b
arrest
trail
verdict and sentence
==================================
Separate question .... can you please confirm the following article is notable and doesnt offend any rules, before i create any more similar ones?: Tiong Bahru bus hijacking WorldTravleerAndPhotoTaker (talk) 08:13, 25 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Please be aware that Wikipedia is not an INDISCRIMINATE collection of items in a list, nor is it a database of people or events. While Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and contains encyclopedic content, not everything gets included. A fair amount of content curation is undertaken, with any examples you provide needing to demonstrate both the subtleties and extremes of the topic in question. If you were to write an article about "Drug trafficking in Singapore" (note the capitalization), it should much more like the Drug trafficking by country section in the article about the Illegal drug trade, with a lot more analysis and research citations about the Singaporean aspects of the subject. Also, its content should not duplicate that in the article about Capital punishment in Singapore. Also, since Wikipedia does not have hard and fast rules, I cannot give any guarantee about the notability of, or applicability of any Wikipedia guidelines to, either the Tiong Bahru bus hijacking or any other Wikipedia article. This is a consensus decision that is made by all contributors to Wikipedia. Wikipedia has various processes available to you, or any editor, if you want to test that consensus. And you will only find this out by following the BOLD, revert, discuss cycle. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 23:01, 25 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
OK sure, i think ill just add the ref links to each row in the Capital punishment in Singapore so people can read up some more on each one if they wish, would that be acceptable ? WorldTravleerAndPhotoTaker (talk) 08:05, 26 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You, and almost everyone else on the internet have the ability to edit almost every Wikipedia article. Rather than discussing here what you propose to do to the Capital punishment in Singapore article, please be bold and add in-line citations for each case that you think needs it. I cannot give you any indication if what you propose to do will be acceptable to Wikipedia editors. Simply be bold and do it, and then wait to see if your edits are accepted or rejected. Citations for reliable sources are usually acceptable, but if your edits are rejected, then discuss why on the Talk:Capital punishment in Singapore page, (not here), and reach an agreement with other editors about what you should do. You might want to use a citation template, and there is one for citing court cases. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 08:45, 26 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Don't be disheartened

Dear WorldTravleerAndPhotoTaker, I am NelsonLee20042020 I am writing you this message to show you encouragement and support, to tell you not be disheartened.

There are times where some articles would get nominated for deletion, which may result in deletion or keep or merge. I got myself a fair share of nominations too even though I havent got a deleted article on my record.

I believe you are writing what you think deserves their standalone articles, but there are things to take note when you make articles, probably like the notability of the event (like Toa Payoh ritual murders, Sunny Ang and Anthony Ler), the media coverage of the event (like Kallang River body parts murder), as well as the legal significance/effects a case may bring about (like the notorious gunman Lim Ban Lim whose case prompted the passing of the 1973 Arms Offences Act and the Oriental Hotel murder where one of the convicts' appeal led to changes to life imprisonment laws). Many other factors may also determine how notable the event is (I myself also cannot remember every guideline too to be honest).

Not just newspaper articles (of whichever language like english and chinese) as cited sources, you may consider adding maybe like links to any documentaries or books or relevant journals that cover the legal cases.

This is probably all the advice I wish to offer to you as best as I am concerned. Hope you will continue editing, and dont let the deletion nominations become the setback against you :)

It appears that you have been canvassing—leaving messages on a biased choice of users' talk pages to notify them of an ongoing community decision, debate, or vote. While friendly notices are allowed, they should be limited and nonpartisan in distribution and should reflect a neutral point of view. Please do not post notices which are indiscriminately cross-posted, which espouse a certain point of view or side of a debate, or which are selectively sent only to those who are believed to hold the same opinion as you. Remember to respect Wikipedia's principle of consensus-building by allowing decisions to reflect the prevailing opinion among the community at large. Thank you. Tails Wx 11:41, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

oh i am sorry, i did not know that was against policy .... i asked because that person had previously argued in favour of Keeping the exact same article so was giving a nudge as it was down to a final vote, thanks for clarifying i will not do this again WorldTravleerAndPhotoTaker (talk) 11:53, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Don't worry :) Please do keep this in mind, though! Tails Wx 13:09, 22 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I feel like you didn't understand the point that @Liz made above. We each get to vote only once when an article is at WP:AFD. When it is renominated, that is to give time and opportunity for editors who did not already vote to participate, not for those of us who !voted already to opine again. Disputed non-free use rationale for File:Wang Ziqi mugshot.jpg

Thank you for uploading File:Wang Ziqi mugshot.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator seven days after the file was tagged in accordance with section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 14:00, 14 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Tangaraju Suppiah

Hey there, pal. Thanks for the editing you made in Tangaraju Suppiah. I got exams in this week itself so I did not have time to go into the specific details of the case other than updating small info. You did a great deal of help here, and thanks again. Just wanna show my gratitude here :) --NelsonLee20042020 (talk) 10:01, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@NelsonLee20042020 no problem, I read about this yesterday on a local news site and it got me interested in the case, i cant seem to find anything online regarding reporting in Singapore itself regarding the case at the time of the trail itself, must not have been judged to be newsworthy .... i have all the relevant edits completed now but will keep checking online for more sources incase anyone complains we only use the trial transcript (tho we can argue its the only true source available), i will also highlight continuing international reaction to bolster the article's worthiness for publication ... P.S. good luck with your exams !! WorldTravleerAndPhotoTaker (talk) 10:13, 25 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Unfree media

Please stop uploading unnecessary unfree media to articles. Unfree media is only used for essential identification when a free alternative is impossible (i.e. the subject is dead and no free images of them were made when they were alive) or in isolated cases where something is specifically discussed in depth and the image provides meaningful illustration of that specific subject (i.e. not blurry black and white photos of empty rooms or hotel bills) Dronebogus (talk) 07:21, 3 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable non-free use File:Delroy Grant crime scenes map.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Delroy Grant crime scenes map.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of non-free use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of non-free use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{Di-replaceable non-free use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable non-free use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:52, 8 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your upload to Wikipedia:

You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete or generic. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact source (such as the web page, or printed document) where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain, search engine, pinboard, aggregator, or the direct/bare URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. hi @Diannaa, sincere apologies if i have copied the content over in violation of the rules, i always try to paraphrase information but this subject is quite complicated and the only way to accurately replicate it is to copy over some of it verbatim. hope you dont mind but I added an extra line (in my own words) to help explain the over arching reason for splitting the device into two pieces: "This enabled strict security procedures to be enforced, such as storing each subsection in separate vaults with different codes for each door, which were intended to help prevent anyone from having easy access to an entire weapon system." A tag has been placed on File:Mary Jane Fiesta Veloso.png requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a non-free file from a commercial source (e.g. Associated Press, Getty Images), where the file itself is not the subject of sourced commentary. If you can explain why the file can be used under the non-free content guidelines, please add the appropriate non-free use tag and rationale.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion".
