This article was deleted from WikiSource because it was originally distributed under a non-GFDL compatible license which expressly forbade commercial use.

I contacted the author, Vernor Vinge, regarding changing the license on this document to one which is hopefully compatible with the GFDL. He changed it to the following:

Earlier this year I wrote to Phil Allen, co-discoverer of the crater, with an e-mail based on Wikipedia:Boilerplate request for permission#Informal (images), asking for his permission to release Image:Silverpit crater seismic map.jpg under the GFDL. I asked Susan Sweeney (the copyright owner) if we could use the photos on In My Garden on Wikipedia. She said we could use all we want, so long as we don't give permission for anyone else to use them. I explained to her that we couldn't use the photos unless they were licensed under the GFDL, and I explained to her what that meant. I requested permission to create a bio on Sonia Lee Kahn, Philippe Kahn & Fullpower, his 4th successful company. The Kahn's are innovation & business icon's throughout the central coast, ca communities and in the wireless industry around the world. Prior to interviewing with the company I found research vague and somewhat inaccurate. I only knew that because of confirmation of facts with employees of their former company. Once hired I requested permission from both Philippe and Sonia to be able to create Wiki articles on both of them and the company. They agreed and authorized the content as accurate. I found a small photograph of an industrial wet cooling tower on the website of the Marley Company (who engineer, design and construct such cooling towers) at http://www.marleyct.com/wet/. I wanted to use that photo in Cooling towers and so I wrote the webmaster and asked for permission to do so. He sent me an email and granted me permission.

I then sent him another email, using information from Wikipedia:Boilerplate request for permission, and asked him to grant me permission under the terms of a GNU Free Documentation License (often referred to as the GNU-FDL, or GFDL) and explained to him, in detail, what that meant. I also told him where he could read the complete text of the GFDL. I then asked him to review it with his management and have someone in his management grant me permission under GFDL. I have just received such permission from Don Lillig, the Manager of Marketing Communications and Design, SPX Cooling Technologies (who are the parent company owning the Marley brand cooling towers). A preliminary paper by David Paton called "Random Behavior or Rational Choice? Family Planning, Teenage Pregnancy, and STIs" was cited and the PDF linked to in the article Emergency Contraception. However, there was a warning at the top of the page saying that the paper could not be cited without permission. This wasn't exactly a request for permission, more a clarification that a person who already granted permission was in a position to do so. commons:User:Radustefanescugross uploaded numerous images of George Ştefănescu's paintings (on Commons) and marked them with [[:commons:template:Bild-CC-by-sa/2.0/de]]. I corresponded with him to verify how he was in the position to grant that license. The answer is that he is Ştefănescu's son, and he is exactly the person who handles permissions for exhibition catalogues, etc. So this should be OK: we are on exactly the same footing as an exhibition catalogue for an exhibition of Ştefănescu's work. - Jmabel | Talk 19:19, 19 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I wrote to Benjamin Percy, American author, asking him who holds the copyright of the image of him on his website. He said he does, and when asked if he would allow it to be published into the public domain, he agreed, saying that "yes of course you have my permission." The image seems to be a scanned copy from a news paper. Does PakDef.info itself own copyright? I hardly think that a seemingly war picture, taken presumably by military personnel, would be copyrighted by a private photographer. Mr. Shabbir has been a military photographer with the Pakistan Army during the 1965 and 1971 wars. This picture is indeed scanned, but he took the photograph and owns the copyright of the picture. He has taken several other famous war pictures. You can view his work and other war pictures on the link I provided in the picture summary.
