Digital technology is becoming essential for businesses across all industries. But in many ways, quality assurance (QA) laboratories — whether they are in food and beverage, pharmaceutical, environmental science or any number of other fields—are still operating with the kind of technology that was around in the 1990s. It’s time to step into the future.
Digitally Driving Data Analytics for Faster Product Development
Leaders of scientific R&D groups understand that an ecosystem of multi-disciplinary workflows drives innovation, such as high quality drugs and therapeutic agents. To stay competitive, product developers rely on data to make informed decisions. [Read More]
A leading diagnostics laboratory that specializes in DNA based testing was in the process of implementing a LabVantage LIMS. Recognizing the complexity of LIMS implementations, the group was interested in engaging a team of consultants to assist with developing a project strategy, establishing a project plan and providing LabVantage LIMS specific guidance to the project team. The fragmentation of cannabis regulations poses a particular challenge for multi-state cannabis testing labs. Although the industry and state regulators are trying to align requirements and standards, testing labs still lose many of the benefits of multi-state operations. CannaQA is a laboratory information management system (LIMS) that can help multi-state laboratories...
In this brief 2020 paper published in JAMIA Open, Seifert et al. of the University of Florida health system share their experiences with taking their Beaker LIS implementation and improving its data tracking capabilities, which in turn improved "trainee education, slide logistics, staffing and instrumentation lobbying, and task tracking" within their anatomic pathology laboratories. After a brief introduction, the authors demonstrate Beaker's status board and weaknesses, and then show how they used Beaker's MyReports module to develop an improved status board. They then state six significant challenges and how they used the adapted LIS tools to solve them. They conclude that "the technical and/or functionality framework that we demonstrated in this manuscript could be adapted by other institutions to address common problems encountered by anatomic pathology laboratories."

This document is based on a presentation delivered by chemist and automation consultant Joe Liscouski at the 2nd Annual Lab Asset & Facility Management in Pharma 2019 conference held in San Diego, CA, on October 22nd, 2019. It is not a verbatim transcript, but an expansion of the material presented. The presentation addressed the importance of effective technology management and planning within scientific work. With improved technology management and planning, "[t]hat work should yield better organized systems, reduced costs, better workflows, and improved ROI. How do you go about it? That is what we’ll start to address in this material."
