  • Replacing a Legacy LIMS at the PESC

The Pacific Environmental Science Centre (PESC) had been using a LIMS developed in the 1970s, DEC-PDP 11/94 mainframe, but, with multi-functionality required, covering 105 applications, and with 12 functional areas of the laboratory and around 500,000 tests conducted per year, the system was becoming increasingly more difficult and time-consuming to maintain. During a StarLIMS User Group conference, Richard Stubb, Head of Scientific Support at PESC, describes the migration of 25 years of database programming within 117 days. (more)

  • What is a LIMS?

Many LIMS systems also have integrated billing, personnel training record tracking, instrument calibration, chemical inventory and a customer relationship management module. LIMS systems can be quite simple form a set of Excel templates and Word report templates, to a sophisticated data management solution that provides all of the above features and much more in terms of automated data import from instrument integration, automated e-mailing, faxing of reports and other tasks, Intelligent Character Recognition (ICR) to scan documents directly into the database, secure web-based sample or specimen submission and reporting. • Interfacing LIMS to Mine Data Systems

Most analysts understand the benefits a LIMS can bring to their operation. They can help reduce transcription errors, allow better utilization of staff by reducing the amount of time spent keying in data or calculating results, improve turnaround time, and more. • 11/17/2003 - Somerset, NJ, USA - Eastern Analytical Symposium 2003

The return of EAS to Somerset in 2002 was a welcomed homecoming. We will remain in Somerset for 2003, and for the future. I was very pleased with the 2002 Symposium and Exposition. The exhibitors provided an outstanding venue for evaluating new instruments and acquiring technical product information and our technical sessions, short courses and workshops truly delivered on the promise of "providing practical solutions to our analytical chemistry problems." On a personal note, I was also very pleased with the opportunity of seeing old friends, colleagues and acquaintances and value the new friendships that were initiated. It was truly a homecoming!.
