Laboratory Information Management Systems Worldwide Outlook

Market Analysis and Forecast Through 2008

LIMS:  Coming Out of the Lab and into the Enterprise

Obsolete hardware platforms and operating systems are inefficient and costly. Keeping pace with changing business needs requires agile partners who can provide flexible solutions that are scaleable to meet future needs. Solutions that provide economies of scale across the enterprise can increase productivity and improve product quality.

The objectives of the organization will define the Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) requirements and determine the degree of integration between LIMS and Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES). It may be complete integration is required or be as simple as electronically logging samples from the ERP system to the LIMS and updating the system with a disposition. In order to be effective, critical information subsets maintained in ERP and LIMS records must be shared and synchronized, such as sample testing, specification targets and limits, revision numbers, and dates.

The outlook for LIMS is positive as more enterprises seek to improve the management of lab data and make knowledge available for the purpose of increasing productivity. As the number of test samples continues to rise, even the smallest laboratories that are still using paper notebooks will be compelled to automate their information management systems.

Strategic Issues

TThe LIMS market is reaching maturity as legacy players lose market share to more agile competitors. Some of the key business issues facing the agile supplier are:

  • How will the FDA’s PAT initiative impact LIMS?

  • Which industry segments are primed to grow the fastest?

  • What factors are contributing or inhibiting adoption of LIMS systems?

  • How will off-the-shelf LIMS solutions transform the market?

  • What role will LIMS play in the new pharmaceutical industry business model?

  • What is the forecast for services?
