The Bioinformatician will oversee the implementation of the Advance Molecular Detection (AMD) program and work collaboratively with various lead positions in laboratory, epidemiology, and informatics and coordinate overall projects with academic consultants.
Job Responsibilities
Primary Duties & Responsibilities:
You will be responsible for a wide range of tasks, including:
- Developing databases to compile vast amounts of information from activities such as gene expression profiling and protein expression. Duties also include gathering data that would include statistical modeling. Primary contact for creating data algorithms and specialized computer software to identify and classify components of a biological system, such as DNA and protein sequences and consult with GPHL units to analyze data sets.
- Coordinating and facilitating monthly Bioinformatics Workgroup to include academic consultants, IT, informatics, epidemiology, and program staff.
- Training laboratory staff on the analytic workflow with a focus on expanding GPHL workforce and QA implementation and adopting Oxford Nanopore methodologies to expand the use of these methods.
- Staying informed of the modern, state-of-the-art bioinformatics methodologies and recommendations from federal partners.
- Sharing data, as results and presentations, with the broad group upon request.
- Work under tight deadlines in a highly dynamic environment, manage multiple tasks and projects, and effectively coordinate with Admin Team for Production Deployment. This would also include working closely with Data Engineer and Informatics on various database integration and workflows.
Minimum Qualifications:
Master’s degree in bioinformatics from an accredited college or university
OR
Bachelor’s degree with higher level of expertise in computer engineering, computational biology, computer science, or related field AND
- 3+ years of:
- Strong understanding of data extracts, data blending, publishing options.
- Performing and documenting data analysis, data validation, and data mapping/design.
- Ability to perform data analysis and troubleshoot data integrity issues.
- Able to perform basic QA/QC analysis and utilize commercial software packages to perform SNP calling, genome assembly, limited phylogenetic analysis and whole genome analysis.
- Able to work at the command line level to perform some bioinformatics analysis or build pipeline with limited capabilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Able to develop, test and implement custom bioinformatics pipelines.
- Capable of analyzing a wide range of data from different sources.
- Excellent knowledge of at least one scripting language and Unix/Linux, and able to work with statistical packages such as R.
- Can provide some guidance to the clinical labs on requirements needed (such as type of sequencing or number of reads needed) to perform the bioinformatics analysis.
- Understanding of and experience with cloud computing.
- Knowledge of commercial, and publicly available bioinformatics tools and data sets.
- Experience with public health domain is a plus.
