“The Impact and Explosion Effects Branch (IEEB) of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), Vicksburg, MS, is conducting research on projectile penetration and perforation, both with metal projectiles, and into metal targets. A vital step to understanding the impact phenomena is having accurate mechanical properties and material models for use in physically based and high-fidelity models. Often these metals are a form of steel, but metals such as aluminum and Rolled Homogeneous Armour (RHA) have also been used in recent years. To validate laboratory research and develop computational models, the materials that are used by the IEEB in impact testing must be characterized across a range of strain rates, including the high-strain rates that are representative of an impact situation.
The contractor will receive the raw materials, provided by IEEB, and carry out the required testing to characterize the materials according to the level of fidelity requested of it. Following the material tests, the contractor will provide IEEB with a report detailing the test sample prep, test standards utilized, test procedures, test data results, and the material characteristics determined, including pre- and post-test sample photographs and any applicable test videos. The contractor will dispose of all post-test samples, and any raw material that may be left over, after 60 days, unless the IEEB request any of it be returned; in which case the IEEB will provide return shipping/receiving cost.”
