PerkinElmer Launches Powerful New Modular Dispense Technology at Lab Automation 2005

PerkinElmer Inc. (NYSE: PKI), a leading provider of drug discovery, life science research, and analytical solutions, today announced the launch of its newest Evolution(TM) P3 now with Modular Dispense Technology(TM) (MDT). Modular Dispense Technology is a proprietary technology that enables rapid automated dispense head exchange delivering unparalleled assay performance, breakthrough miniaturization and significantly improved laboratory productivity. The modular dispense technology platform provides a series of dispense heads, including the new proprietary NanoHead(TM), enabling unmatched dispense performance down to 50 nL.

PerkinElmer’s Evolution P3 with MDT is the premier microplate processing platform on the market with the functionality to combine any user-defined liquid handling protocol with ultimate dispense tool optimization providing complete walk-away automation. MDT enables customers to rapidly select from numerous dispense heads and formats for 96 to 1536 well applications to provide a level of choice for optimizing assay protocols not possible with any other system.

“PerkinElmer continues to solidify its leadership position in the drug discovery marketplace and we are committed to helping our customers solve their most pressing problems. We are introducing our Evolution P3 Precision Pipetting Platform with MDT technology at this year’s Lab Automation, which sets a new standard in automated liquid handling for microplate applications,” said Peter Coggins Ph.D., president of PerkinElmer Life and Analytical Sciences. “Along with highlighting our expanding liquid handling instrument suite we will also be showcasing products aimed at enhancing our customers’ transition to cellular screening, and driving fundamental productivity improvements into the drug discovery and development process.”

In addition to the Evolution P3 Precision Pipetting Platform with MDT, products and platforms to be showcased at Lab Automation include:

Live cell screening:

— CellLux(TM) uHTS Cellular Fluorescence Workstation: A fully integrated, robust live-cell screening platform with superior application capability and performance. CellLux enables maximal flexibility and functionality for cellular screening, featuring: patented fiber-optic imaging, integrated “inject and read” liquid handling, walk-away screening capability, multitasking, and AssayPro(R) software for integrated data handling and analysis. The CellLux also provides superior performance for ion channel screening, an increasingly important drug discovery application.

— Cellular Workstation: fully integrated and automated workstation for conducting cell screening, tying together PerkinElmer’s detection, liquid handling, and chemistry technologies and creating a walk-away, easy-to-use solution for a variety of cellular applications.

— ATP-Lite(TM) One-step: a high-throughput live cell assay for evaluating compounds’ toxic effects on cells. This easy-to-use, scalable approach allows customers to perform toxicity testing during primary screening, thus enabling the elimination of poor candidate compounds much earlier in the drug discovery process.

High throughput screening:

— EnVision(TM) “Turbo” AlphaScreen(TM) Capability: new technology enhancements double the power of current EnVision AlphaScreen detection, thus increasing throughput and sensitivity, as well as expanding applications. AlphaScreen is a highly sensitive and homogeneous bead-based luminescent chemistry used for screening bimolecular interactions in a microplate format. The ability to now accelerate its read-out timeframe expands its utility for HTS laboratories.

— FlexDrop(TM) EX: new precision reagent dispenser for rapid dispensing of solvents, reagents, buffers and cells enables dispensing of 1-4 reagents in volumes from 200 nL to 2.0 mL, with dispense accuracy of less than or equal to 5 percent. The new EX model includes two stacker cassettes with capacity for up to 50 SBS-standard microplates for automated, walk-away processing.

— ViewLux(R) ultraHTS Microplate Imager Software Enhancements: these additions to the world’s benchmark uHTS multilabel reader significantly increase screening flexibility, expand data analysis capability, and improve fluorescence performance thus allowing screeners continued improvements in both performance and productivity.

— ELISA Workstation: a fully integrated, walk-away workstation, automating traditionally labor-intensive, multi-step ELISA assays. The ELISA workstation utilizes application-specific protocols integrated with PerkinElmer detectors, washers, and dispensers, thus speeding up the process from sample preparation to results generation.

— LANCE(R) Beta-Secretase: an optimized assay kit based upon PerkinElmers proprietary and market leading time-resolved fluorescence technology. This kit enables customers to screen a key target related to Alzheimer’s disease in a robust, high-throughput and cost-effective manner.

— OptiPlate(TM) 384-HS: microplate specifically designed to reduce background interference for uHTS imaging assays; a perfect complement to the ViewLux uHTS imager.

Details regarding PerkinElmer’s complete protein array platform will also be available.

— ProScanArray(R) Microarray Analysis Systems, upgradeable microarray scanners with “true” 5 micron laser excitation designed to integrate image acquisition and analysis for both proteomic and genomic applications.

— Piezorray(TM) Non-contact Printing System, a non-contact microdispensing system designed specifically for pipetting sub-nanoliter volumes for fabricating dense microarrays.

— ProteinArray(TM) Workstation, a highly flexible system designed to automate protein array experiments to improve throughput and reproducibility.

— HydroGel(TM) Coated Slides, the microarray substrate engineered to maintain protein activity and accessibility for a variety of assays.

— TSA AUTOMATED Kits, designed to work with the ProteinArray Workstation for automation of PerkinElmer’s Tyramide Signal Amplification for use on protein microarrays.

The Evolution P3 along with PerkinElmer’s full product line for live cell screening, and automation and detection will be at the Lab Automation Conference 2005 being held in San Jose, California, from January 31 – February 3, Booth 709.
