Chemtech Modernizes Automation of Water Transmission And Storage System of the São Paulo Metropolitan Region

In the beginning of December, Chemtech completes one month of work with Sabesp, Basic Sanitation Company of the State of São Paulo, one of the three largest water companies in the world and the largest in the Americas.  Chemtech is responsible for the modernization project of the System of Operational Control of Supply, the SCOA.

Through SCOA, a system which Sabesp has been using since 1977, it is possible to manage the transmission of treated water from the Water Treatment Plant to the reservoirs, throughout the Integrated Water Supply System of the São Paulo Metropolitan Region.

With the New SCOA, after this modernization, it will be able to control and simulate all the drinking water arriving at the São Paulo reservoirs and which is then, through the control of another system, taken to the homes.  Chemtech is supplying and configuring the supervision and control system (Power TG – Siemens), the process data historian (Simatic IT Historian – Siemens), the decision support system (drinking water transmission and storage system simulation), the interface with internal systems and of the operational intelligence module (XHQ – IndX Siemens).  Chemtech is also designing the physical infra-structure of the new control room.

This project involves SCADA and PIMS configuration, performance indices definition, operational intelligence (XHQ), interfaces with Sabesp internal systems and the modeling and simulation of the drinking water transmission and storage system for the region.  Project implementation, to be completed by February 2007, will take place without affecting water supply.

Data from more than 180 remote plants spread over an area of approximately 1,500 km2 will be acquired.  After the job is finished, the project developed by Chemtech will bring some advantages to the company:

• decision support system integrated to all control tools;

• operational intelligence system (XHQ) rendering available performance indices per remote plant, per area, per unit and corporate;

• possibility of comparing the various Sabesp corporate systems on data regarding water consumption by the population vs. production of treated water.

Such modernization is important and strategic to Sabesp since it will allow operational safety improvement, cost optimization, and the supply of operational and managerial information to Company Units, plus the adoption of new technologies in an integrated manner.

This is the first large project by Chemtech in the water industry and the first using XHQ (data visualization software which Chemtech has already been using in 25 ExxonMobil refineries) in Brazil.

Chemtech has wide expertise in all areas concerning this project.  And to ensure that for this project the customer will get even better quality and long-lasting solution six work teams were created: Supervision and Control; Macro-measurement and Pitometry; Infra-structure; Decision Support; Integration with corporate systems and operational intelligence; and Operation Management.

Providing basic and environmental sanitation is one of the ways of ensuring more health to the population and, because of this, Sabesp seeks to meet the needs of this sector by planning, performing and operating drinking water, sewage and industrial effluent systems.  All the water collected by Sabesp destined to water supply undergoes strict treatment process and sanitary control before reaching the homes of the population. The same management quality standard applies to sewage collection and treatment.

This work counts on the technological support and cooperation of over 18 thousand employees; it will help the company to contribute to the improvement of the life of the population and to environmental preservation due to the supply of treated water and sewage collection and treatment which will help, for instance, in the prevention of water source contamination and disease proliferation.

Sabesp figures among the world top companies in sanitation indices and it is constantly investing in the improvement and enlargement of water production and distribution systems and in sewage collection and treatment.  The benefits of such work are the reclamation of rivers and beaches, the increase in employment offers, and the reduction in infant mortality, among others.
