Lab Tests Online releases “A Guide to Navigating Genetic Testing”

May 31, 2012 — Lab Tests Online, a project of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry, is pleased to announce “A Guide to Navigating Genetic Testing”, an online overview and resource guide to better understand the rapidly maturing field of genetic testing.

“Genetics is the new frontier in medicine,” said George Linzer, Executive Producer of Lab Tests Online.  “We hope in this era of advancing technology and patient empowerment, our articles and links on genetic testing can help provide vital information for taking care of one’s own health. “

With two in-depth articles on genetic testing and links to various online resources, including the PBS/NOVA program “Cracking Your Genetic Code” and the U.S. Genome Project coordinated with the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health, Lab Tests Online serves as an important resource for people who want to expand their understanding of genetic testing and how it affects them.

“The growth in availability and discussion of genetic testing in recent years is changing the health care landscape and the kinds of decisions that we all may be asked to make,” said Linzer.  “We are offering an easy-to-use roadmap to an area of medicine that is often difficult to understand, both for patients and professionals.”

Lab Tests Online, a noncommercial, peer-reviewed patient resource on medical laboratory testing, is developed in the US by the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC) in collaboration with 16 other laboratory organizations. Launched in 2001 and based in Washington, DC, Lab Tests Online (labtestsonline.org) is today a global standard for patient education, with versions of the site localized for use in 15 other countries.  Last year, 30 million patients, caregivers, and medical professionals from around the world visited a Lab Tests Online website for free information on hundreds of tests, conditions, and screening recommendations.

The AACC is a leading professional society dedicated to improving healthcare through laboratory medicine. Its more than 9,000 members are clinical laboratory professionals, physicians, research scientists, and others involved in developing tests and directing laboratory operations.
