Laboratory Technician 6

Ke’aki Technologies is looking for a Laboratory Technician 6 to work on our United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) contract at Fort Detrick, Maryland.
Duties include:
- Shall perform microbiological tasks with viable Bacillus anthracis spores and cells, Yersinia pestis, Burkholderia mallei and pseudomallei, Brucella spp., Coxiella burnetii, Francisella tularensis or other pathogens in a BL-3 containment suite. Must determine the viability of suspensions of B. anthracis cells or spores and other organisms by plating onto nutrient agar media. Must be able to prepare and sterilize bacteriological media, reagents, and laboratory supplies. Must be able to prepare tissue cultures from animal cells.
- Shall be willing to work in BSL-3 containment with select agents.
- Will work with animals used in experiments including restraint, bleeding, immunizations, and necropsy, and be able to support a variety of animal studies by administering therapeutic compounds to animals by a variety of routes of administration.
- Will participate in aerosol challenge of various species of lab animals with anthrax spores, or viable cultures of other agents as well as animal monitoring during experiments and performing necropsies as needed for tissue collection.
- Shall prepare antibiotics for administration to animals in support of therapeutic experiments.
- Shall work in close coordination with other government contractors and government employees in studies of B. anthracis, Y. pestis, Burkholderia mallei, Francisella tularensis or other pathogens therapeutics and vaccines to bacterial diseases.
- Work involves specialized knowledge and experience to conduct regulatory laboratory studies for early and advanced “tech base” candidate medical products. Laboratory activities usually require compliance with and a working knowledge of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requirements for Good Laboratory Practices (cGLP), Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP), or Good Clinical Practices (cGCP).
- Maintains the clinical laboratory information system for all clinical laboratories and select agent repository for the laboratory. Performs or participates in the performance of a variety of clinical laboratory examinations, including, but not exclusive of, the following tests, procedures, examinations, and evaluations on the blood, urine, and other body fluids obtained from experimentally infected laboratory animals: specimen referral; clinical chemistry; hematology; urinalysis; microbiology.
- Shall maintain laboratory records in a neat and orderly fashion and participate/present during group discussion of results when required.
- Maintain a safe workplace ensuring that he/she is aware of and observes appropriate safety and occupational health rules and regulations. Employee is required to attend safety training relative to his/her position and report any infractions of safety procedures to the facility Safety Officer.
- Must complete mandatory Federal, DoD, Army, and USAMRIID trainings as required.
- May require variable work schedules and occasional weekends in order to accomplish time sensitive laboratory tasks.
- Bio-safety Level 2 and Bio-safety Level 3 (BSL 2/3) required.
- In order to safely carry out the laboratory research mission, certain FDA licensed vaccines will be required to be taken.
Requirements:
- BS degree and 7 years’ experience or MS degree and 2 years’ experience.
- Enrollment in the Biological Personnel Reliability Program (BPRP) for handling select agents – he or she must maintain enrollment. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements as regulated by Army Regulation 50-1 (AR 50-1) http://www.fas.org/irp/doddir/army/ar50-1.pdf
- Shall have experience with in vitro antibiotic susceptibility assay systems and be able to perform pharmacokinetic determinations on antibiotics from various animal species.
- Shall be familiar with bioassays and other antibiotic determination methods from animal serum and tissues.
- Shall have experience in immunological and microbiological techniques.
- Shall have received and continue to receive the necessary vaccinations against anthrax, smallpox, tularemia and other disease-causing agents as needed.
- Shall have experience in microbiology techniques including cultivation, storage, identification and manipulation of a wide variety of pathogenic bacterial strains.
- Shall be able to prepare and analyze biological samples using molecular biology techniques to include PCR assay, microarray or other identification techniques.
- Shall have knowledge of, or shall learn, the ordering systems, writing SOW, contract writing, and all supporting documentation.
Clearance:
- Must be able to complete a favorable Single Scoped Background Investigation (SSBI).
