PHII is a partner in a global health surveillance network aimed at preventing childhood mortality in developing countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and south Asia. The Child Health and Mortality Prevention Surveillance network, or CHAMPS, will help speed and improve acquisition of data about how, where and why children are getting sick and dying. In 2019 The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation committed $180 Million over 6 years to support this program. CHAMPS is envisioned to be a 20-year program based initially at six sites, but eventually could be expanded to additional sites. The Emory Global Health Institute (EGHI), which houses the U.S. office of the International Association of National Public Health Institutes (IANPHI), serves as the lead partner in the new global network of surveillance sites. PHII will oversee the data management operations and IT strategy, assessing and managing the multiple streams of data collected from the sites.
