Accelrys and Technische Universiteit Eindhoven Collaborate to Advance Combinatorial Materials Science

San Diego, CA, October 21 2003

Accelrys, a wholly owned subsidiary of Pharmacopeia, Inc. (NASDAQ: PCOP), today announced a three-year agreement with Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e) to provide Accelrys’ CombiMat data management system for High-Throughput Experimentation (HTE). The agreement, co-funded by the Dutch Polymer Institute (DPI), calls for the deployment of CombiMat technology in the University’s Laboratory of Macromolecular Chemistry and Nanoscience, headed by Professor Ulrich Schubert. The agreement will provide researchers at TU/e access to Accelrys software to assist them in their research efforts, and provide a venue for the practical application and validation of Accelrys Combimat technology.

Combinatorial chemistry and HTE are research technologies and methodologies that have been widely adopted by pharmaceutical scientists for the purpose of lead identification in drug discovery. The application of these techniques to areas such as the design of polymers, catalysts, and dielectric materials is a relatively new and emerging area of research. HTE has the potential to increase the speed and efficiency with which materials are discovered and optimized in the diversified chemicals and microelectronics industries.

“Accelrys’ tools will allow us to more effectively manage our polymer research,” said Dr. Ulrich Schubert, Professor of Macromolecular Chemistry and Nanoscience, Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, “Using this software to improve our HTE processes will help us to advance this emerging technology and allow us to provide valuable feedback to Accelrys on the future design of CombiMat.”

CombiMat imports data from a wide variety of analytical instruments used in HTE. It supports high-throughput design, characterization, testing, and analysis of materials samples. It also records the complete information context of this process so that successful methodologies are captured and knowledge is shared. The resulting data can be browsed, searched, graphed, and shared with third-party data mining or productivity tools.

About Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e)

Technische Universiteit Eindhoven focuses on fundamental/strategic technological research that is relevant for industrial or other applications. This contributes to the strengthening of the competitive position of trade and industry, and to the solving of social problems. Nationally and internationally, TU/e holds a prominent position in the research fields of communication technology, materials technology, and catalysis. Moreover, TU/e wishes to strengthen the field of bioengineering. TU/e is the commissioner of ten research schools recognized by the Royal Dutch Academy for Science, as well as two of the six Dutch top research schools and one of the four top technological institutes.

The Laboratory of Macromolecular Chemistry and Nanoscience focuses on both classical and combinatorial polymer science as well as Nanotechnology. Current interests in polymer chemistry are in the area of living cationic polymerisation, block copolymers, atom transfer radical polymerization, polymer blends, coatings and solar cells. Of particular interest is the combinatorial and high-throughput synthesis and screening of polymer libraries as well as the extensive use of molecular modeling and data mining. Moreover, the laboratory is engaged in an extensive research program, concerning the synthesis, preparation and application of supramolecular polymers.
