Accelrys Announces DS Accord for Excel

San Diego, CA, July 17 2003

Accelrys, a wholly owned subsidiary of Pharmacopeia, Inc. (NASDAQ: PCOP), today announced the release of its first Discovery Studio(TM) cheminformatics desktop product, DS Accord for Excel. This release makes Accord for Excel’s powerful Microsoft(R) Excel-based tools for managing, visualizing, and analyzing chemical information now available within the Discovery Studio product-line, enabling seamless data-sharing with other Discovery Studio products. The release also features a new ADME (absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion) add-on containing models for blood-brain-barrier permeation, human intestinal absorption, aqueous solubility, and serum protein binding.

The new ADME capabilities help to determine the drug potential of a compound by enabling pre-screening of individual structures, compound libraries, and other screening sets with important ADME properties. The ADME models can also be used with the CombiChem add-on module, enabling scientists to design, construct, and refine compound libraries directly within the Microsoft Excel environment prior to laboratory synthesis or biological screening.

“Predictive ADME models help scientists design ‘drug-like’ characteristics into synthesis candidates early,” says Dr. Scott Kahn, chief science officer of Accelrys. “Reducing the number of problematic candidates and focusing on attractive candidates offers substantial quality benefits and cost savings to the pharmaceutical industry.”

DS Accord for Excel helps chemists to solve research problems by enabling them to see, sketch, analyze, and report chemical structures, compound libraries, screening results and other chemical information directly within the familiar Microsoft Excel environment. The Accord engine enables Excel to understand chemical structures as inputs in order to easily perform chemical calculations and graphing.

Discovery Studio products use a best-of-breed approach to offer an advanced, standards-based, accurate, and versatile way to deal with chemical and biological information. In addition to the new ADME add-on, CombiChem and Syracuse add-ons extend the core capabilities of DS Accord for Excel and provide a common working environment for various applications.
