Agilent Technologies first to integrate Microsoft Visual Basic for applications with logic analyzer for data analysis, visualization

Agilent Technologies Inc. has introduced its advanced customization environment for logic analyzers, the industry’s first seamless integration of Microsoft(r) Visual Basic for Applications into a logic analyzer application. This software solution enables engineers to customize data analysis and display to quickly gain insight into the cause of problems in the digital portion of a system. Agilent’s advanced customization environment is an essential tool for R&D engineers in the computer, communications, semiconductor, aerospace/defense, automotive and wireless industries for validating and debugging basic logic, embedded systems and high-speed digital designs. Agilent will demonstrated this new application for the first time at the Embedded Systems Conference in San Francisco.

“Engineers have expressed the need to tailor the logic analyzer interface with a wide range of control, analysis and display capabilities specific to their measurement or application,” said Ron Nersesian, vice president and general manager of Agilent’s Design Validation Division. “The ability to create integrated dialogs, graphical displays and analysis functions with Agilent’s advanced customization environment helps our customers quickly manipulate measurement data into a format that provides additional insight and answers.”

As the complexity of digital systems increases, engineers must analyze and view data in ways previously unavailable in logic analyzers. Agilent’s advanced customization environment provides four methods to help customize and evaluate data:

  • Data analysis — Create custom dialogs and analysis macros that can be shared with others for repetitive analysis tasks.
  • Data visualization — Charts data in an easy-to-understand format for analyzing system characteristics such as bus utilization and performance optimization. This charting function provides multiple formats for categorizing data, including line graphs, XY scattergrams such as I/Q plots, bar charts, pie charts and more.
  • Measurement control and automation — Create an automated test suite that modifies the trigger for the next run based on the analysis results of previous runs.
  • Link to external PC applications — Use existing analysis functions in COM-enabled applications such as MathWork’s MATLAB(r) by launching and transferring data for further analysis.

The Agilent advanced customization environment offers engineers two software solutions, the B4606A and B4607A. The Agilent B4606A development and runtime package provides access to the full edit, modification and execution capabilities of the advanced customization environment. The B4607A runtime package enables importation and execution of solutions developed by Agilent or by colleagues using the advanced customization environment.

Additional Information

The Agilent advanced customization environment is compatible with all Agilent 1680, 1690 and 16900 Series logic analyzers and PCs running offline analysis with logic analyzer software version 3.00 or higher.
