Agilent Technologies introduces advanced ICP-MS for analysis of trace metals in environmental samples
Agilent Technologies Inc. (NYSE: A) today introduced the Agilent 7500ce inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) system for trace-metals analysis in environmental applications. The new system is up to five times more sensitive than its predecessor, providing low parts per trillion (ppt) detection in a wide range of difficult samples, from wastewater to foods to biological specimens. It is designed to meet the strictest U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and worldwide regulatory requirements.
Environmental samples often contain very low concentrations of the analyte of interest and high levels of interfering elements. These “dirty” samples have presented an analytical challenge for typical ICP-MS instruments. However, the Agilent 7500ce ICP-MS is specifically designed for environmental applications, providing the highest sensitivity, interference reduction and stability for complex, high-matrix samples. The system is equally suited for use in the clinical, foods, petrochemical, metals, pharmaceutical, forensic and geological industries.

The ICP-MS incorporates several design innovations for the analysis of dirty samples. Its Octopole Reaction System features redesigned ion optics and a new, high-transmission reaction cell, which allow the Agilent 7500ce to detect analytes at ppt levels even in samples with high amounts of dissolved solids. With a dynamic range of nine orders, the new system can measure both trace species in the parts per trillion level and major elements in the parts per thousand level in the same analytical run.
The Agilent 7500ce ICP-MS system is designed for ease of setup and use. The interference removal system is matrix independent and does not require complex, element-specific optimizations. The sample introduction area has an open design, offering easy access for maintenance and facilitating clean sample handling.
