Beckman Coulter Launches Two New Solutions for Laboratory Automation
Beckman Coulter, Inc., has introduced two new laboratory automation workstations, the Biomek® 3000 and the Biomek® NX. Designed for solution-focused life science and clinical research markets, the flexible new platforms extend the company’s ability to address applications requiring low- to mid-range throughput capabilities. Both systems are available for shipment.
“Beckman Coulter’s goal is to provide customers with solutions, not just instrumentation,” said Elias Caro, president of Beckman Coulter’s Biomedical Research Division. “The Biomek 3000 and NX workstations are critical elements in our strategy to expand our customer base by bringing automation to bear on lower throughput applications.”
The Biomek 3000 workstation is best suited for academic and forensic laboratories, while the NX workstation is ideally suited for biotech, pharmaceutical, and specialty testing and molecular pathology laboratories conducting research for drug discovery and development. Both new systems provide a smaller footprint than Beckman Coulter’s sophisticated, high-throughput Biomek FX liquid handling system.
“With the addition of these two new systems, Beckman Coulter now offers a full range of liquid handling solutions, meeting throughput requirements of low-, medium- and high- throughput customers,” said Caro. “Already recognized as a leader in liquid handling automation, we are now well positioned to capture a larger portion of the $670 million liquid handling market.”
The new automated workstations increase sample throughput in low- to mid-range liquid handling applications, improving the accuracy and precision of assays. This capability allows life science and specialty testing researchers to focus on results and decision-making, rather than performing routine and mundane, time-consuming, sample preparation tasks.
“The flexibility of these solutions is what makes them unique. They are small enough for use in laminar flow hoods for applications requiring a controlled environment, and robust enough to reliably handle daily sample preparation protocols, while delivering reproducible results,” said Caro.
The Biomek 3000 and NX workstations share a common software platform with the Biomek FX system, enabling users to easily transfer methods between platforms as throughput and application needs change. In addition, the Biomek software enables users to meet 21 CFR part 11 requirements.
Beckman Coulter, Inc. is a leading manufacturer of instrument systems, chemistries and supplies that simplify and automate laboratory processes. At the forefront of medical discovery, in clinical research and through the often life-saving process of clinical diagnostics, Beckman Coulter’s 200,000 installed systems provide essential biomedical intelligence to enhance health care around the world. The company, based in Fullerton, California, reported 2003 annual sales of $2.2 billion with 64 percent of this amount generated by recurring revenue from supplies, test kits and services.
