BETH ISRAEL MEDICAL CENTER DEPLOYS PHT’S LOGPAD® IN PHASE III CLINICAL TRIAL

Charlestown, MA, USA –- January 6, 2004 — PHT Corporation, maker of LogPad®, the market-leading electronic patient diary (EPD) solution for clinical trials, announced today that Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City will deploy LogPads to all subjects in its upcoming Phase III clinical trial for lower back pain that is funded through a $1.7 million grant from the National Institutes of Health. LogPads will be used to capture electronically subjects’ self-reported outcomes before and after they receive an IV infusion of pamidronate, the drug being tested.

“Electronic diaries represent an innovative and efficient method of data collection,” said Marco Pappagallo, M.D., Director of the Division of Chronic Pain at Beth Israel and the study’s principal investigator. “Palm computer technology has been customized to become an effective tool for clinical research. Interactive, electronic diaries can lessen the subjects’ boredom that often occurs with day-to-day filing of paper questionnaires. They also eliminate data entry violations, such as filling out multiple questionnaires in one day. LogPads will make it easier for study subjects to provide their input, and much easier for the researchers to track results and analyze data.”

The trial includes subjects who are experiencing moderate to severe levels of lower back pain. The LogPad will be used to assess subjects’ pain levels, sleeping patterns and overall health both before and after the infusion is administered.

“This trial is an excellent example of the LogPad’s ability to increase the scientific value of a clinical trial,” said Phil Lee, President and CEO, PHT Corp. “More and more top research centers are using EPDs to increase data quality and trial efficiency. It bodes well for the overall growth of this market.”
