November 20, 2014 - Reigning in your scattered Lab Data & Information

New Technology and Instruments have presented us with a plethora of data and information, both a blessing and a challenge at the same time: they are invaluable and overflowing. What’s worse is it’s scattered across various computers, instruments, labs, and sites and combining data from multiple disparate systems can be problematic.

October 29, 2014 - The Key to Interfacing Lab Instruments to LIMS or ELN

No matter what changes are made over time, the tool, style, or data format standard used to create or facilitate instrument interfacing is not the true critical success factor for interfacing instruments.

October 27, 2014 - Innovate or die!: Genomic data and the electronic health record (EHR)

The sharing of patient data, such as test results, is important for appropriately treating patients. Inclusion of this data allows for clinical error prevention, particularly if a new clinician becomes involved. If genetic information, including family history or genetic test results, is not accessible to treating physicians, care may suffer. Innovation is needed to address the problem of lack of access to important data, such as genomic test results, not structured to fit into an EHR.

July 3, 2014 - What Happened to Phase 2 of your LIMS Implementation?

It’s a funny thing but if you ask anyone who has been involved in the LIMS industry for any length of time, they will uniformly agree that Phase 2 of LIMS implementation projects rarely, if ever, come to fruition. Is this because breaking a LIMS implementation into multiple phases is wrong? Not really. There are perfectly good reasons to do so like:

May 14, 2014 - Automated Level IV Data Packages for Environmental Data Reporting

Adopting modern LIMS systems that can provide insurance for environmental laboratories. Nobody likes to pay for certain types of insurance until they need it – especially home, auto, life etc. But in the environmental sector, there is a type of insurance that is often utilized and is valuable even if the results aren’t being legally or scientifically challenged.

April 9, 2014 - Productivity Is A Must When Managing The Efficiency Of Your Lab

Think of all the features and characteristics that may be keeping your lab from being as productive as possible. The list could be extremely long. In today’s lab environment these aren’t roadblocks but are merely challenges. At the highest level, what you are likely faced with is too much manual work for your staff and some operational processes that are inefficient or time consuming.

March 26, 2014 - Report Designs in LIMS do matter in today’s “visible” world

Most of us are not accomplished graphic designers - or photographers for that matter. But our clients still expect that we will produce easy-to-follow reports that can help them to communicate with other stakeholders how your laboratory is performing. One of the best ways to ensure that your reports have the information and look you want is to utilize the features inherent with report templates within a LIMS. You should have the choice to customize the look and feel that meet your needs and answer any questions your customers have.

March 11, 2014 - Common Pain Points when Finding a LIMS

A Laboratory Information Management System can be a lifesaver for a lab that does not have one. Properly implemented, a LIMS can increase productivity and efficiency almost immediately after installation as well as automate data management.

February 20, 2014 - What is a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)?

A Laboratory Information Management System, more commonly referred to as a LIMS, is a software system designed to help manage the workflow and daily operations in a laboratory. February 21, 2013 - Gasmet Technologies – FTIR gas analysis improves container safety

Entry to freight containers represents a significant hazard to staff responsible for inspection, stuffing or destuffing because of the large number of airborne chemicals that can be present. Research in Germany and the Netherlands found hazardous levels of gases and vapours in around 20% of all containers and this level of contamination is now accepted as commonplace. It is therefore necessary to examine containers before entry and this work is usually conducted with a wide variety of gas detection techniques in order to be able to assess, individually, all of the substances of greatest concern. However, a Dutch firm of health and safety consultants, Reaktie, has employed FTIR (Fourier Transform Infra Red) gas analysis to dramatically improve the speed and effectiveness with which containers are assessed, because this technology enables the simultaneous measurement of the 50 gases of most concern.

February 6, 2013 - Interview with organization that built its own sample tracking system.

One option for a science company with unmet data management needs is to simply build a software solution from scratch. You might think that this would be strictly the domain of large well-resourced organizations, but even for a small business or startup this can be a possibility that can yield unexpected benefits. There are still places in the US where a lower cost of living means that software developers are not as expensive as they are in silicon valley, and with patience, persistence and a bit of luck, business owners can indeed find highly talented local individuals who can create a great solution even in the least "techie" of locales. In the following interview, I talk with key players at a small midwestern biotechnology company who needed a better way to manage their extensive collection of biospecimens. The company prefers to stay somewhat anonymous, so I have used pseudonyms; "The Biorepository" is the name of the business, "PM" is the primary project manager and biorepository specialist who helped with research and design, "Dev" is the software developer who made it all possible and "Tissue Database" or just "TDB" is the name of the solution itself. "Bob", is of course, yours truly, the author of this blog.

January 7, 2013 - User Requirements

User requirements are perhaps the most important part of any comparison shopping experience, but they are often overlooked. Many users do not take the time to accurately define their requirements. Vendors do not really help the matter for a couple of reasons, the first reason being vendors are not the entity buying the system and whereas they can make suggestions, they cannot really define requirements for someone else. The second reason vendors do not help with this issue, is they really don’t have a vested interested in helping a client define the requirements.
