The ability to efficiently handle HL7 messages is vital to successful healthcare integration. This demonstration shows Ensemble’s built-in capabilities for rapidly integrating healthcare applications, including:

August 18, 2006 - This makes a lot of sense….

I was reading a very interesting blog this evening about the problems that Bausch & Lomb is experiencing with their Contact Lense Fluids and the relation to Fusarium Keratitis, an eye fungus that can possibly cause blindness in contact lens wearers. The blog author provides a great idea about integration of public health and incident data using SOA (Service Oriented Architecture).

August 18, 2006 - Where's the beef… I mean LIMS?

I was reading a blog on the Internet today. In reading his blog, it was critical of LABLynx and Perkin Elmer for not posting enough information on their respective web sites concerning their products. It reminded me of the old commercial that asks: “Where’s the beef?” I wonder why LABLynx and Perkin Elmer were singled out. As far as I can tell, none of the other LIMS vendors provide much by way of detailed product information.

August 18, 2006 - I was wrong!

I once wrote a blog about Thermo clearly gaining the lead in the LIMS market with their acquisition of Innaphase. There were some good points made by the president of Labware to counter my opinion at that time.

As a result, the demand for measurement data is ever increasing, and therefore, measurement data must be with reliable with unequivocal evidence to prove accuracy and precision. The philosophy and procedures by which data users can obtain proof of the reliability accuracy of measurements is commonly referred to as quality assurance.

July 18, 2006 - Extract your Outlook Emails to PDF files in bulk

I have found a pretty cool tool to extract your Outlook Emails to individual PDF files in bulk. If you are like me you have thousands of emails in Outlook and need a way to extract those emails to a common format for archiving or sharing.

June 27, 2006 - Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) — User Requirements: No Surprises is Key to Success

Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS) are by nature complex to design and build. They can be successfully applied across almost every facet of lab work, or once built, unfortunately, turn out to be essentially worthless.

June 24, 2006 - LIMS Project Failure – an excellent report on the cause

I recently wrote a blog on the failure of the LIMS at the FBI and provided a link to the article in the newspaper that reported the failure. Now the US DoJ, Office of the Inspector General Audit Division, has released, what I would consider, a very excellent and thorough report which provides an analysis of the cause and the recommendations. You can read more and view the entire report here.

The "GAMP Guide for Validation of Automated Systems (GAMP 4)" is recognized as industry standard for computer validation. While this guide is an excellent framework for computer validation in general it is not detailed enough for specific applications, for example, laboratories.

June 16, 2006 - FBI cancels LIMS contract with JusticeTrax – Here we go again…

Is the FBI jinxed or what? It seems like only yesterday that I wrote a blog concerning the FBI's failures on another large IT project. Granted 2 points do not make a trend but something is really wrong here.

May 29, 2006 - Mirror, Mirror on the wall, what’s the most popular site of all?

Have you ever wondered how a search engine determines how to rank a web site. Well, it is a mystery to most everyone except the developers of search engines. Those developers (magic mirrors) have the answers but they are not saying, at least not directly.

May 20, 2006 - I just can't decide if this is Good or Bad. Maybe you can.

I was reading a blog today at Lab Soft News entitled "Reference Lab with a Money-Back Guarantee". It got me to thinking how far our industry has declined or from another point of view how far our industry has advanced. I just can't decide which has happened.
