Clinical Laboratory Microbiologist
Job Description:
The Clinical Laboratory Microbiologist will be tasked with determining the sensitivity & resistance of pathogens (bacteria and fungi) identified in patient samples to a panel of antibiotics. The successful candidate will have hands on experience with culturing pathogens from various clinical sample types including mucus (sinus and throat swabs), urine, skin and other body fluids. Previous experience working in a research or clinical diagnostic laboratory (performing high complexity molecular laboratory tests) with analysis and experience using real-time PCR testing is desired. This position requires a Bachelor’s or Masters degree with a major in chemistry, biology, microbiology or a related field with training in microbiology techniques and experience in clinical microbiology.
Job Responsibilities:
- Independently culture pathogens identified in patient samples.
- Identify sensitivity/resistance patterns to antibiotics in cultured pathogens (MIC).
- Preparation, confirmation, and storage of confirmed pathogens (glycerol blots).
- Analyze laboratory findings, present results, and assist in writing laboratory protocols.
- Performs troubleshooting for instruments, methods, procedures.
- Contribute to the improvement of laboratory processes and procedures.
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain equipment used in microbiology techniques.
- Maintenance of required laboratory inventory and patient sample archiving.
- Participate in Quality Assurance and Quality Control programs per CAP/COLA/CLIA requirements.
- Provide training and guidance to junior personnel and monitor their work quality.
Job Skills:
- Candidates must have experience in culturing pathogens from patient samples and determining antibiotic sensitivity.
- Experience using current technology (Sensititre, Phoenix M50, Vitek 2, etc.) to determine sensitivity (MIC) to antibiotics.
- Experience preparing stock solutions and titrations of confirmed organisms.
- Fundamental knowledge and experience of clinical laboratory regulations (CLIA, COLA, CAP) is preferred.
- Experience with automated liquid handling platforms is desired but, not required.
- Troubleshooting & working with minimal supervision – Must possess problem-solving abilities to determine the causes of errors and deciding what to do about it.
Reporting and Authority:
- The Clinical Laboratory Microbiologist will report to the Director of Research and Development and the Director of Laboratory Operations.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in physical sciences or Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Biology or Microbiology. Previous experience which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job responsibilities is preferred (OR)
- Master’s degree Chemistry, Biology or Microbiology or related area with research experience that provides the ability to perform required job functions.
