Data Unlimited International, Inc. – Strategies in Large-Volume DNA Analysis

ReliaGene Technologies, Inc. – a Starfruit client since 2003, delivered noteworthy papers at the 2005 AAFS Meeting in New Orleans USA.

The increasing national backlog of DNA samples has needed a sample processing system aiming at high throughput and short turnaround time. Many government forensic laboratories outsourced their no-suspect samples to private forensic DNA laboratories including ReliaGene Technologies, Inc.  The presentation of ReliaGene Technologies, Inc. demonstrated its proven approaches of the automation to analyze large-volume DNA samples to assure that the short tandem repeats (STRs) results could be well accepted by the court systems.

Starfruit IdentiTrack® Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) tracks batches or plates of quality control (QC) samples (positive, negative and extraction blanks) and the large-volume DNA samples to insure that the reagents used to produce the profiles from the DNA samples also produce the appropriate results from the QC samples. ReliaGene Technologies, Inc. chose Starfruit IdentiTrack® Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to automate documenting the large-volume DNA samples’ movement and analysis including sample accessioning, screening, differential separation of sperm, DNA extraction, DNA quantification, amplification, data analysis, and reporting.

If the QC samples do not produce the expected result, Starfruit IdentiTrack® Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) invalidates all the DNA sample data and documents the errors. Starfruit’s ability to track and document is the most important when a DNA scientist troubleshoots problems. Starfruit provides data and reports about what samples and QCs go together to investigate what happens to produce a flawed result.
