Dennis Gilbert, Ph.D. Elected As Chief Scientific Officer And Vice President For Research Of Applied Biosystems

Applied Biosystems Group (NYSE:ABI), an Applera Corporation business, announced that Dennis Gilbert, Ph.D., has been elected Chief Scientific Officer and Vice President of Research of Applied Biosystems and a Vice President of Applera Corporation.  In his role as Chief Scientific Officer, Dr. Gilbert is responsible for leading the Group’s scientific and technical programs and coordinating cross-divisional research and development efforts.

In this new position, Dr. Gilbert will recruit and lead Applied Biosystems’ first external Scientific Advisory Board, as well as an internal Technology Board that will coordinate technology strategy and development issues. Dr. Gilbert will continue to lead the Scientific Advisory Council (SAC), a group of senior-level staff scientists established in 2003 to promote scientific excellence throughout the organization. As part of its charter, the SAC is identifying a set of Grand Challenges that will inform Applied Biosystems’ scientific and product development strategy in the coming years.
 
In addition, Dr. Gilbert will continue to direct the Applied Biosystems Advanced Research and Technology (ART) organization, which is responsible for identifying and developing new technologies and applications, conducting world-class technology and biological research programs, and cultivating external technical and scientific relationships. Dr. Gilbert will continue to report to Catherine M. Burzik, President of Applied Biosystems.

Dr. Gilbert, 46, has more than ten years of senior management experience at Applera.  Before being named Vice President of Advanced Research and Technology in 2003, he held the positions of Vice President, Genomics Applications, Applied Biosystems and Vice President, Gene Discovery, Celera Genomics Group. Prior to joining Applied Biosystems as a research scientist, he was Program Manager, Genetics at W.R. Grace.

Dr. Gilbert received a bachelor of science in biochemistry and cell biology from the University of California, San Diego, and his Ph.D. in genetics from Johns Hopkins University, followed by postdoctoral training in population genetics at the National Cancer Institute.
