e2v implements Kalabie Electronic Lab Notebook for Biosensors R&D

Chelmsford UK & Paris France, May 3rd, 2007, Chelmsford, England: e2v biosensors, a subsidiary of e2v technologies; its research staff, now use Klee Group’s Kalabie Electronic Lab Notebook Software as the all-day, every-day tool for recording and capitalizing on information from Research and Development activities.

“Implementing a paper lab notebook process gave us guarantees on the traceability of our developments and operating to good practice, but we wanted to go further as the majority of our R&D generates electronic data, which is difficult to secure within a paper notebook system.”, said Dr. Ailie McCabe, Development Manager at e2v biosensors, “Kalabie ELN centralizes and secures all data from experimental work with the high level of traceability we required. Furthermore, we can now find, pull-out and export information on any given project with minimal effort compared to that needed in a paper-based environment”.

“The development of a typical Lab-on-a-chip device at e2v biosensors brings together a wide range of scientific disciplines, including materials science, computational fluid dynamics, molecular modelling, micro- and nano-fabrication, physical and organic chemistry, molecular biology and even clinical medicine and toxicology” stated Dr. Brian Allen, General manager. Choosing a suitable software package for their electronic lab notebook was less simple than imagined. e2v biosensors found that many available solutions were not well adapted to their requirements, since most commercial packages were specifically designed for chemists in the pharmaceutical industry, a sector that has lead the market on ELN adoption over the past years, while other less rigidly structured solutions did not always offer the quality guarantees they required for a central application that would be important for their day to day work.

Dr. Brian Allen adds, “Our scientists and engineers need all the rich functions provided by Kalabie to manipulate text, tables, multiple file types and images within a wide variety of protocols which we have set-up in the Kalabie library; our management needs to be assured that all the data we produce is of good quality, complete and that versions are completely traceable. Ease of use is another key factor since we have better things to do than to learn how to use complex software”.

“Klee Group sees the e2v Biosensors reference as a demonstration of the flexibility of the Kalabie ELN to handle projects that span multiple disciplines. The diverse activities of our customer base encouraged us to build in this capacity from day one of the design phase and we are particularly pleased to be able to count on a leader in cutting edge technology as a witness”, said Ian Murrell Sales Director at Klee Group.
