EKM Corp. Illustrates Benefits of Electronic Lab Notebooks During BIO-IT World Expo
Leaders from San Diego-based EKM Corp., an award-winning knowledge discovery systems technology firm, will join other renowned life science leaders at the BIO-IT World Conference + Expo in Boston May 17-19 to discuss innovative technology solutions for drug discovery and development.
One of those cutting-edge tools is EKM’s Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN) LABTrack(TM). LABTrack – software that runs on any Windows-based device – is the first electronic lab notebook that combines an easy-to-use scientific word processor interface with a relational database and built-in rules set. The software allows researchers the ability to format electronic pages that mirror paper-based notebooks. LABTrack offers a date/time stamp that is “fingerprinted” and retained in a secure manner that meets federal requirements for intellectual property. The LABTrack series also includes a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and cGMP functionality for manufacturing.
LABTrack is the topic of a lecture led by Richard Stember, CEO of EKM’s Scientific Division. The lecture, titled, “Electronic Lab Notebooks in the Real World,” is scheduled for May 16 at 4:30 p.m. in the Hynes Convention Center, Room 312, in Boston. The lecture is part of the Oracle Life Sciences User Group Conference. The presentation will review and illustrate the benefits ELN’s bring to the individual scientist, research teams, and to an entire organization.
A growing number of research institutions, government organizations and life science companies are replacing paper lab notebooks with ELN’s to improve efficiency, to better protect data, and enhance collaboration.
“In today’s fast-paced lab where results are needed now, it is critical to effectively maintain and access all data,” said Stember, a world-renowned ELN expert and creator of LABTrack. “With the rising amount of data that research laboratories have to deal with, EKM is working to provide the most effective IT solutions to enhance productivity and results to help our life science companies and research institutions remain competitive.”
All research-driven organizations rely on the proper recording, documentation and the analysis of data, as well as the communication of research results to allow them to make fact-based decisions quickly.
“However, the accessibility and effective communication of the intellectual property and discoveries contained within current paper lab notebooks is woefully lacking, leading to missed opportunities in business, technology development and synthesis of new discoveries,” Stember said. “It’s only a matter of time before all research labs go electronic.”
About LABTrack:
LABTrack is the notebook of choice used by research, analytical, production and academic laboratories. LABTrack is tailored to fit any organization’s processes and procedures, existing notebooks, templates and reports.
EKM offers three versions of LABTrack – Personal, Team and Enterprise.
The Personal version, which is used on any PC running Windows, is ideal for the individual researcher. The Team version is a server-based application designed for small to medium groups of researchers who access the lab notebook to add info, make changes and to collaborate in real time. The Enterprise version is a powerful and flexible server-based collaborative application that can be accessed by several thousand users in a large corporation or academic/research institution, including top-level management.
