Food Safety and Agricultural Analysis at AOAC

PHILADELPHIA (August 27, 2008) – Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc., the world leader in serving science, will showcase a selection of its latest laboratory instrumentation and informatics solutions for food, beverage and agricultural applications at the AOAC International annual meeting and exposition. The products will be featured in the Thermo Scientific booths 201, 203 and 205 at the 122nd AOAC 2008 in Dallas from September 21-24, 2008.

Thermo Fisher Scientific is uniquely positioned to provide the most comprehensive range of end-to-end solutions to meet the growing demands of global regulatory agencies concerned about the quality and safety of food intended for human and animal consumption. The company’s solutions can be found in all stages of food production from the farm to the table and from the production of raw materials to the packaging that delivers the product to the customer. In addition, Thermo Fisher provides tools to assess the impact of agricultural interventions on the environment, encompassing the detection of exceptionally low concentrations of pesticide residues, antibiotics and veterinary residues.

Thermo Fisher will host a number of poster sessions and deliver a presentation entitled `The new era in food safety methods through advances in mass spectrometry.` The presentation covers food safety regulations from the European Community, Japan and the U.S., and it will be held on Tuesday, September 23 at 9:45 a.m. in the Cumberland KL room.

Increased international public concern about the presence of contaminants in the food chain has led to heightened interest in the regulatory issues regarding contamination or adulteration of food products. Thermo Fisher Scientific’s offerings at AOAC will include a number of progressive solutions for the identification of contaminants within the food chain and the environment. Products being showcased include:

Thermo Scientific Nautilus LIMSTM data management software, which automates laboratory workflows by integrating instruments, providing automated screening, user notifications and providing traceability of sample results back to their source. Nautilus is designed for use in dynamic laboratories where ongoing analysis, varying materials and product demands require heightened adaptability. Offering unmatched flexibility and ease-of-use, the laboratory informatics management system (LIMS) help organizations such as The Coca-Cola Company in the U.S., Ingredia in France and the Department of Agriculture in Ireland monitor control and compliance with food, beverage and agriculture industry related regulations (HACCP, CODEX, 21CFR part 11 and ISO 17025).

The Thermo Scientific ExactiveTM, a new benchtop LC-MS system, accommodates the most demanding compound screening and identification applications. Resolutions of up to 100,000 allow identification of pesticides, metabolites and other target compounds within complex samples. Eliminating many of the technical steps that require specialized set-up and operation, the Exactive provides excellent mass accuracy in positive and negative modes for screening pesticides.

The Thermo Scientific TSQ Quantum triple quadrupole system enables highly selective reaction monitoring (H-SRM) performance. Teamed with FAIMS, this technology provides significant immunity against matrix interferences. It features a unique ESI probe with Dual Desolvation Zone technology that further optimizes performance and speeds method development. In combination with the new Thermo Scientific TriPlusTM Autosampler, any type of injection technique is possible.

The Thermo Scientific AriaTM TLX-2 system, powered by TurboFlowTM technology, offers the industry’s most advanced analytical method to reduce the amount of time spent on sample preparation typically associated with other methods. In addition, the TLX system offers the only truly independent, parallel, multi-channel high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) system in the industry, increasing the mass spectrometry throughput and avoiding the high capital costs associated with other methods.
