Free NI Measurement Services Software Offers New Tools, Resources for Reducing Development Costs

National Instruments today announced the newest version of its measurement services and driver software, NI-DAQmx. Free for download at www.ni.com, NI-DAQmx 7.4 is the foundation of the measurement services software included with most NI data acquisition (DAQ) devices, including M Series multifunction DAQ devices. Application developers can use NI measurement services software to lower system costs by substantially reducing software development, system setup, configuration, maintenance and calibration time. NI-DAQmx 7.4 delivers a flexible programming interface for NI LabVIEW, NI LabWindows/CVI and Measurement Studio for Visual Studio .NET, and includes new time-saving tools such as NI-DAQmx simulated devices, the new Channel Calibration Wizard and additional professional tools.

The new NI-DAQmx simulated devices feature gives engineers and scientists added flexibility for developing PC-based data acquisition applications. Developers can create NI-DAQmx simulated devices to virtually explore device capabilities and begin DAQ application development without having the physical hardware present. NI-DAQmx simulated devices also are ideal for experimenting with software tools such as DAQ Assistant or NI SignalExpress without setting up a physical acquisition.

Engineers and scientists can use the new Channel Calibration Wizard to quickly calibrate the entire measurement path for a channel from the sensor to the measurement device. Engineers calibrate the measurement by applying an external calibration reference, comparing the measured to the actual value and then applying the resulting correction to every measurement taken on that channel. This calibration supplements internal device calibration by accounting for errors introduced by the sensor, signal conditioning and cabling. Many existing drivers only offer overall device calibration and neglect the inaccuracies introduced through the rest of the measurement path.

The new professional tools included in NI-DAQmx 7.4 deliver capabilities such as data compaction for increased data streaming rates, programmatic NI-DAQmx task creation and saving, additional channels and scales for smoother application deployment and hardware-task triggered events for developers using text-based development languages.
