HONEYWELL WILL SUPPLY QUALITY CONTROL AND WEB IMAGING SYSTEM TO SWEDISH PAPER MILL

Honeywell (NYSE:HON) has received an order to provide a quality control and a web defect detection system to Stora Enso’s paper mill in Kvarnsveden, Sweden. The systems will improve production efficiency and paper quality at the mill.

Honeywell will supply and install three Da Vinciâ„¢ quality control systems and four Web Imaging Systems (WIS) for the mill’>
The Da Vinci system measures basis weight, caliper, moisture, ash, gloss and color at the paper machine and at the two supercalenders. Exceptional scanning speed and cross-directional (CD) profile resolution of the Honeywell sensors ensure excellent quality control results despite the high production speed and the 10.4 meter web width.

The Honeywell WIS system, powered by Cognex machine vision technology, detects and classifies even the slightest defects in the paper web. The system locates the defects and automatically stops the winder at a selected defect, thus enabling it to be quickly eliminated from the web. Efficient web defect management will minimize waste, reduce the number of web breaks and improve paper quality for end-customers.

“Our control solutions combine paper-making expertise and in-depth knowledge of paper properties with the latest sensor technology,” says Timo Saarelainen, director of Honeywell’s Center of Excellence Finland. “This project is an excellent example of our efforts to create sensor-based solutions driven by the very latest technology that help our clients manage their paper production in non-conventional ways.”

Kvarnsveden Mill is part of Stora Enso’s Paper product area. Today the mill has an annual production capacity of approximately 700,000 tons of newsprint, improved newsprint and uncoated magazine paper. With the new production line the total capacity will exceed one million tons per year.
