University of Edinburgh, founded in 1582, is the sixth oldest university in the English-speaking world and one of Scotland's ancient universities. The university played an important role in leading Edinburgh to its reputation as a chief intellectual center during the Age of Enlightenment, and helped give the city the nickname "Athens of the North." The university boasts three colleges hosting 20 different schools. The university ranked 36 among global universities and scores high marks for its arts and humanities as well as biological programs according to U.S. News & World Report's 2016 rankings.^[1]
