UKSPA Conference Topics for L.A.B. Scientific Programme Announced
L.A.B. – the European trade fair and conference for analysis, bio and laboratory equipment in the UK announces the first in a series of conference programmes to take place at the 2009 exhibition in Birmingham from October 27-29. The United Kingdom Science Park Association (UKSPA) has joined Leipziger Messe to organise two day-long programmes: an informative conference stream focusing on current issues and best practice for laboratories and a Business Forum.
“Laboratory – Design, Management and Operation” is a one day event, taking place on the first conference day Tuesday 27th October. Sessions will cover the latest trends, current best practice and future prospects for UK laboratories. Speakers such as Steffen Springer, Managing Director of Waldner, Mark Bryan of CUH2A HDR, Malcolm Tait of KJ Tait Engineers and Professor Peter James will discuss current developments in the UK laboratory sector. In addition, Norman Mortell, Agenda Resources Management (pictured) will be looking at the topical issue of laboratory security. The conference will include comprehensive talks on the following key industry topics:
¨ Laboratory refurbishment
¨ Achieving the low carbon laboratory
¨ Best practice in laboratory design
¨ Impact of recent legislation and compliance issues from registration of chemicals to new guidance on local exhaust ventilation
¨ Re-engineering redundant and outdated research space
¨ Focus sessions on current issues and technologies ranging from clean rooms to energy efficiency.
“In 2009 – the 25th anniversary of UKSPA – we are working with L.A.B. to help the event deliver its ambition to be the leading European Trade fair for the laboratory, biotechnology and life science sectors, where UK Science Parks need to be at the cutting edge of development and delivery”, states Paul Wright, Chief Executive, UKSPA. “We are delighted to work in partnership with Leipziger-Messe. The trade fair and conference programme provide the perfect opportunity for companies based on UK Science Parks to meet with the laboratory sector at a major international event”, adds the Chief Executive.
As part of its support at L.A.B. 2009, the UKSPA has also organised a one day Business Forum for visitors, taking place on Wednesday 28th October. The Business Forum will feature speakers including Alex Clarke, Photonics Cluster (UK) Project Manager, Aston Science Park, Mike Pagan, Managing Director, Breaking Frontiers and John Sealey, Director, Your Marketing Matters Ltd. The UKSPA contribution will ensure that the Business Forum demonstrates the role that Science Parks – and other UK environments – play in delivering solutions at a time of economic downturn. UKSPA is working with Aston Science Park to ensure that these sessions are both relevant and practical to the businesses that attend the Forum.
The sessions will cover:
¨ Safeguarding your commercial interests in a recession
¨ What support is available to companies during the downturn
¨ UK Trade Investment (UKTI) – working competitively overseas
¨ Technology Strategy Board (TSB) – Small Business Initiatives and
¨ Maintaining the Sales Pipe Line
As well as speakers from UKTI and TSB the presenters will also focus on the business services available through UK Science Parks. UKSPA has 25 years of experience in delivering the business environments needed to support companies in life science, pharmaceutical and other technology industries. In addition, a number of study tours to local UKSPA member Science Parks in Birmingham and the West Midlands will be available on Thursday afternoon 29th October for interested visitors, conference attendees and exhibitors.
The general themes of the UKSPA conference stream will be complemented by the technical sessions being delivered by event partners Sensors and Instrumentation Knowledge Transfer Network and the Chromatographic Society. About UKSPA
UKSPA is the independent Association for Science Parks and Technology Incubators in the UK. Founded in 1984 by the managers of the eight Parks that then existed, UKSPA has gone from strength to strength. In the last 25 years, the number of Science Parks has grown significantly. UKSPA currently has 67 full member parks, and 13 associate members in the process of planning or developing a park. The companies are based on innovative technologies representing all the major growth areas of technology, the largest two being in computing and bio-related areas.
The 25th anniversary of the formation of UKSPA provides an ideal opportunity to share best practice, engage in discussions and forecast future directions for science parks. In the current business climate, the objective of the Association is to bring together all stakeholders and partners that play an important role in creating the future of science parks and consequently, contribute towards economic development. As well as supporting L.A.B. 2009 the Association will be holding a number of national events which provide opportunities to share best practice and showcase innovative solutions that shape the future of science parks and nurture the Knowledge Economy of the United Kingdom.
