I was reading a blog today from Joel Limardo at www.limsexpert.com. In reading his blog, it was critical of LABLynx and Perkin Elmer for not posting enough information on their respective web sites concerning their products. It reminded me of the old commercial that asks: “Where’s the beef?” I wonder why LABLynx and Perkin Elmer were singled out. As far as I can tell, none of the other LIMS vendors provide much by way of detailed product information.
I recently wrote a blog on the failure of the LIMS at the FBI and provided a link to the article in the newspaper that reported the failure. Now the US DoJ, Office of the Inspector General Audit Division, has released, what I would consider, a very excellent and thorough report which provides an analysis of the cause and the recommendations. You can read more and view the entire report here.
Electronic Lab Notebooks are rapidly replacing conventional paper note books. They are expected to increase lab efficiency and help to protect IP. The real advantage comes from better sharing data within the laboratory, but also across the enterprise. There are many notebooks on the market with prices ranging from a couple hundred dollars to the 10 or hundred fold. And most of them sooner or later will be used in FDA regulated environments. So industry is unsure what to buy and how to use the in regulated environments.
Web applications are increasingly used for all types of businesses, including healthcare business. Two main applications are the world wide web for all types of on-line transactions and e-mails for exchanging messages with and without attachments. The FDA recognizes the expanding role of the Internet and Intranet in electronic recordkeeping. The Internet cannot be validated but the FDA and European agencies expect the web to be a trustworthy and reliable communications pipeline for electronic records. Users of web applications are unsure how to comply with FDA and EU expectations.
