Where's the beef… I mean LIMS?

Where’s the beef… I mean LIMS?

by John H. Jones – President, LABLynx, Inc.

I was reading a blog on the Internet today.  In reading his blog, it was critical of LABLynx and Perkin Elmer for not posting enough information on their respective web sites concerning their products.  It reminded me of the old commercial that asks:  “Where’s the beef?” I wonder why LABLynx and Perkin Elmer were singled out.  As far as I can tell, none of the other LIMS vendors provide much by way of detailed product information.

In reading the blog, I must agree totally with what the author had to say.  I will speak for LABLynx, since I am the president of LABLynx, Inc.  We acknowledge that our web site does not provide enough information on our product.  However, in our defense, our focus is entirely on serving our customers and product development.  We have not focused on marketing but have focused on our products and customers.  I know that our customers appreciate that and I am sure that Perkin Elmer and most all other LIMS vendors do exactly the same thing.  It is really just a matter of necessity.

Our customers have made suggestions that we do a better job of promoting our products and we agree.  We consider the posting by the opinionated blogger to be a wakeup call for LABLynx, Inc.  We will do a better job of promoting our products but we will not use any of our resources that are dedicated to serving our customers and performing product research and development in order to accommodate marketing needs.

I agree with LIMS consumers that all LIMS vendors should do a better job of communicating to the potential customer base.  We would like to see the entire vendor community post detailed product information on the web along with movie demonstrations and screen shots.  An example of the types of on-line demonstration we plan to produce more of is shown below.  I would like to see all LIMS vendors put out demonstrations similar to these.  Granted, all of this information will be available to not only the customers but also the competition.  However, I believe the advantages of open and full disclosure of product information far outweighs any meager advantages a competitor might gain.

I hope that LABLynx is not the only LIMS vendor who plans to put out detailed product information on the web. I believe that the existing and new LIMS customer base will benefit from more information, not less.  I firmly believe that we will gain more customers by providing those new, potential customers, Instant Information Gratification.
