Laboratory Manager
Summit Biolabs, located in Aurora, Colorado is harnessing the power of saliva-based diagnostics for early detection of head and neck cancer. As a result of disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the company pivoted quickly to develop a saliva-based rapid test for detection of the virus. This patent-protected, extraction-free test has proven to be highly accurate, and comparable to nasal swabs in clinical trials. We’ve been asked by a Colorado philanthropic organization to set up a CLIA-certified lab for production testing to enable students to safety return to in-person learning. You will be directing and rapidly scaling all aspects of the laboratory – orchestrating operational activities, staffing technologists, developing procedures, performing QC, and adhering to all federal regulations. You have experience working in a leadership role within a CLIA-certified lab performing molecular testing. Your ability to manage people and operations in a highly dynamic, fast-paced environment, coupled with your dedication to research and molecular diagnostics, will be the secret to your success. How you’ll be spending your days:
- Establishing a new CLIA-certified clinical laboratory for high-volume COVID-19 testing and overseeing the daily operations – this is exciting stuff!
- Developing procedures to ensure safety, security, quality, and accuracy of results – consulting with medical and scientific directors to overcome any issues
- Managing the laboratory staff including hiring, onboarding, scheduling, and coaching technologists
- Configuring and maintaining the laboratory information management system, ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements
- Ensuring the lab is well-prepped and stocked, including PPE and testing supplies, samples, and results reporting
- Using your lab experience to identify and create action plans for improvement, automation and quality
What it takes to succeed in this role:
- BS degree in biological sciences – bonus points for a grad degree
- At least 4 years of experience as a medical laboratory scientist in a supervisory role within a CLIA-certified production lab – PhD or Master’s degree may be applied toward years of experience
- Strong knowledge of molecular testing, robotic automation, and clinical laboratory operations
- Intimately familiar with validation of laboratory-developed tests, CLIA certification and CAP accreditation
- Understanding of laboratory and clinical software – EP Evaluator, LIMS, and EMR systems
- Exceptional communication skills, written and verbal, with an innate ability to listen actively and query insightfully
- Strong leader with demonstrated talent for to motivating both technical and non-technical team members
