MANAGER, R&D IT SYSTEMS

Vir Biotechnology is a clinical-stage immunology company focused on combining immunologic insights with cutting-edge technologies to treat and prevent serious infectious diseases. Vir has assembled four technology platforms that are designed to stimulate and enhance the immune system by exploiting critical observations of natural immune processes. Our current development pipeline consists of five product candidates targeting hepatitis B virus, influenza A, human immunodeficiency virus and tuberculosis.

 

Vir is seeking a Manager, R&D IT Systems to lead acquisition, development, and deployment of information technology systems for scientific teams in Vir’s research laboratories. Vir’s laboratories, located at three sites in the US, leverage a broad range of scientific technologies. You will be responsible for enabling Vir’s research team to do their best work by providing well-deployed, high quality IT systems and support.  Reporting to the Chief Information Officer, you will have experience leading laboratory IT in a fast-moving scientific research environment and will use your proven leadership, knowledge and experience to manage a diverse team of IT specialists and deliver high-quality execution and operational excellence. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Lead a team of IT specialists to manage the IT systems in Vir’s research laboratories across the US and consult with laboratory IT in Vir’s Switzerland operation.
    • Partner, collaborate and develop strong relationships with other leaders in IT as well as leaders in Research and CMC departments to understand scientific workflows and needs in order to deliver solutions and coordinated support.
    • Manage the analysis, selection, acquisition, customization, rollout, and support of a combination of commercial and custom software solutions to meet the needs and workflows of laboratory staff.
    • Act as a technical lead and participate in projects/programs to drive the delivery of technology solutions to meet research needs, including laboratory operations, data acquisition/storage, and data analysis.
    • Collaborate with other leaders in IT to provide systems integration expertise for non-R&D systems.
    • Collaborate with Data Science on solutions for the secure storage and analysis of laboratory-generated data.
    • Work with IT and Research/CMC management to develop processes for operational support, lab network security, documentation, and project tracking.
    • Manage key vendor relationships to ensure the best possible support for Vir people and systems.
    • Keep abreast of new technology developments and best practices in the external community that may be helpful to Vir.

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

    • At least 5 years of experience managing an IT team
    • At least 5 years hands-on experience supporting IT capabilities and applications in a life science laboratory environment; experience within the R&D divisions of companies within the pharmaceutical, biotech or medical devices industries preferred
    • At least 5 years of experience working in a GxP regulated IT environment, both in implementing validated systems and maintaining the system in a validated state.
    • Experience managing acquisition, implementation, training, and support for laboratory-specific information management systems such as an ELN, LIMS, registries, and screening/assay data management systems
    • Experience with hybrid environments combining on-premises and AWS cloud-based systems
    • Experience directing software development efforts such as commercial software customization or custom software development projects, including the development of requirements and management of an agile development process; experience working in all phases of the software development lifecycle is preferred
    • Ability to operate independently, manage multiple simultaneous projects, and bring projects to a successful, timely completion
    • Strong customer service ethic coupled with excellent written and oral communication skills and an ability to communicate with a cross-functional audience
    • Strong planning and execution skills including meeting and time management

EDUCATION

    • BS/MS degree in an IT/MIS or science-oriented discipline.
