Medical Technologist
The Medical Technologist performs clinical laboratory testing of biological specimens in the chemistry and hematology areas using manual or automated techniques. The Medical Technologist uses independent judgment and cognitive skills to develop data which may be used by the physician in determining the presence and extent of disease. They are responsible for general oversight and training of shared lab staff and oversight of equipment, QA/QC documents, and CLIA survey preparation for the clinical lab area.
Leadership:
- Maximizes team efficiency, productivity and teamwork of the clinical lab staff by providing daily communication, supervision and direction in concordance with company philosophy, goals and objectives.
- Provides regular department updates to team leader.
- Provides assistance to the Team Lead in creating and updating staff work schedules to maintain adequate staffing levels.
- Provides Team Lead with a weekly update on team performance, specimen volume data, projected staffing needs and other pertinent issues.
- Provides comprehensive clinical lab orientation, training, direction, coaching, mentoring, and general assistance of shared lab staff.
- Assists Team Lead with 90 day and annual performance appraisals for the clinical lab area.
- Assists with the selection of and validation of all new equipment and tests introduced into the lab.
- Contributes to the successful implementation and support of change within the laboratory.
- Assists with the preparation of and is present for all clinical laboratory inspections.
- Assists with any responses resulting from deficiencies found during an inspection.
Clinical Laboratory:
- Performs and documents calibration and maintenance of instruments and equipment.
- Performs and documents quality control; evaluates quality control results and takes corrective action when indicated.
- Recognizes indicators of test and/or instrument malfunction and makes basic corrections by using prescribed strategies, or notifies the Team Lead, Clinical Lab Director, or Director of Laboratory Services.
- Documents appropriate information for quality assurance/improvement according to established protocol.
- Receives clinical lab specimens and ensures specimens are properly labeled and suitable for testing.
- Performs, evaluates, and monitors laboratory tests as authorized within established protocols, selecting and performing additional procedures when indicated.
- Evaluates results for clinical significance, validity and appropriateness. Reports and notifies providers of test results in concordance with company policy, philosophy, and objectives.
- Defines analytic accuracy, precision, sensitivity and reference ranges for test methods.
- Provides technical assistance to clinical and support staff.
- Performs internal and external proficiency testing in the same manner as patient samples.
- Assists in improving the quality and efficiency of laboratory procedures, policies, and processes
- Ensures compliance with all accrediting agency standards.
- Establishes policies, procedures and protocols as needed for testing.
- Maintains current knowledge of and complies with the contents of all pertinent policy and procedure manuals.
- Utilizes all required computer information systems appropriately.
- Monitors workflow and makes necessary adjustments to complete work in an appropriate time frame.
- Must be willing to adapt to a growing and ever-changing workplace.
