Microbiologist I

Azzur Labs is a growing company that offers the opportunity to cross train, advance within, and become a part of a close-knit team. The right candidate must be detail-oriented, have strong analytical skills, the ability to work independently and maintain the workplace.  The Microbiologist I performs laboratory testing and interacts with clients, under the guidance of a supervisor, to interpret their results and  has the responsibility to ensure that laboratory testing is completed in accordance to established methods and protocols.  Responsibilities include:

General

  • Keeps the laboratory clean and maintains equipment.
  • Assists others when needed.
  • Follow all safety precautions, use appropriate PPE where required and conduct himself or herself and all testing in a safe, appropriate manner.
  • Read and understand methods and protocols on an ongoing basis. Advise of changes, as required, to improve protocols and methods.
  • Read journals and publications to keep abreast with changes and developments in applicable technologies and methods.
  • Engage in ongoing cGMP, safety and ethics programs.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

 Performing Tests

  • Interact with clients on an as needed technical basis under guidance from a supervisor.  Advise and consult with regard to testing methods, interpretation of results and suggest additional and/or alternative testing or methods.
  • Set-up and analyze tests using aseptic technique and according to protocols, specifications and directives.
  • Collaborate with the implementation, maintenance and improvement of quality systems.
  • Perform laboratory testing in compliance with ISO/IEC 17025.
  • Assist with training personnel, develop training materials and formats as directed by management.
  • Review and maintain records for compliance with laboratory specifications.
  • Conduct onsite testing.
  • Perform required calculations.
  • Notify clients of exceeded levels.
  • Assist with investigations into the impact on laboratory operations resulting from observations, deviations and equipment failures.
  • Design, implement and conduct internal laboratory studies.

 Planning of Tests

  • Collaborate with the schedule and conduct of laboratory tests.
  • Collaborate in scheduling and conduct of laboratory cleaning.
  • Assist with scheduling and conduct of qualifications, validations and calibrations. 

 Reporting Opinions and Interpretations

  • Possess relevant knowledge of the technology used for the manufacturing of materials tested, or the way they are used or intended to be used, and of the defects or degradations which may occur during or in service.
  • Understand the significance of deviations found with regard to the normal use of materials tested.
  • Communicate with clients on an ongoing basis to discuss interpretation of test results, trend analysis and matters regarding exceeded concern levels, follow-ups and reports under the guidance of a supervisor.

Method Modification and Development and Validation of New Methods

  • Collaborate in drafting, executing and reviewing of qualification, validation and calibration reports.

Requirements

  • Bachelors of Science or Bachelors of Arts in the field of the life sciences.
  • Two years experience in microbiology. 
  • Knowledge of: Universal Blood and Body Fluid Precautions; common laboratory equipment, methods, and protocols; infectious agents and diseases; metric system weights and measures; and filing and record keeping systems.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

  • Laboratory setting with exposure to Biosafety Level II organisms
  • Standing for longer periods of time while performing some of the testing
  • Possible ladder use for cleaning and preventative maintenance of equipment
