Omnicell Acquires Closed-Loop, Controlled Substance Inventory Management Software from Ariel Distributing
Omnicell (NASDAQ: OMCL), a leading provider of patient safety solutions preferred by nurses, today announced the acquisition of Ariel Distributing, Inc.’s closed-loop, controlled substance inventory management software for healthcare system pharmacies, used and marketed by Omnicell as “SecureVault™”.
“For a number of years, we have had an excellent relationship with Ariel as an Omnicell software partner,” said John Higham, vice president of corporate development. “However, with Omnicell’s continuing drive to provide comprehensive, end-to-end solutions for the medication-use process, we felt it was time to bring the future development and product support of SecureVault in-house.”
SecureVault software is used by the pharmacy to track, monitor, control, and document the movement of controlled substances from the central pharmacy to all locations within the healthcare facility. The system assists healthcare facilities in meeting DEA regulations as they relate to controlled substance storage, dispensing, and administration. SecureVault features bar code confirmation of all transactions, and maintains a perpetual item inventory and complete audit trail for easy, time-saving resolution of discrepancies. The system also provides a comprehensive suite of reports, including DEA-required reports relating to the utilization and disposal of controlled substances. When used in conjunction with an Omnicell OmniSupplier® drug storage cabinet in the central pharmacy, the system limits user access to controlled substances stored in the central pharmacy by requiring entry of a valid user ID and password.
