Research Associate Type 1 Diabetes – Diabetic Kidney Disease Job

Purpose
The role of Research Associate will provide research-based support for research activities aimed at accelerating the path of antigen-specific and biological therapies for autoimmune diabetes (Type 1 Diabetes, T1D) and for developing biomarkers and evaluating late-stage therapies for diabetic kidney disease (DKD). This position will be responsible for assisting with the performance of in vivo studies and providing technical support in the laboratory.

Relationships
The position will report to a member of the T1D/DKD leadership team and will be supervised by a Research Scientist. This position will interact with T1D/DKD team members and other research groups at NNRC, as well as global internal stakeholders and external research collaborators.

Essential Functions
Works with the Research Scientist and other team members to identify, develop, and implement biomarker assays in support of in vivo studies. Assay methods may include, but are not limited to, histology and imaging, FACS, and ELISpot. Works with Research Scientist to design and conduct laboratory research studies that may include mouse model studies activities include treatment in vivo administration via a variety of injection routes; regular monitoring for disease and welfare; tissue collection; and tissue Processing and in vitro studies involving mouse, human, or non-human primate tissues or cells. Works with Research Scientist to perform basic data analyses. Works in a team-focused environment to ensure progress of global research projects. Manages site inventory. Orders laboratory supplies and equipment. Maintains the laboratories and perform other job related duties as assigned. Developing the knowledge and skills needed to support development and management of research protocols in support of multiple drug discovery efforts. Handles and process human tissue for cell isolation. Performs in vitro assays and perform basic data analyses with supervisor. Identify the correct methods and perform manual calculations for sample preparation. Works in a team-focused environment to ensure progress of global research projects. Supports business goals, shares learnings, knowledge and skills, and cross-functional teamwork. Uses knowledge and experiences to interpret and properly document experimental data. Ensures data integrity. Conducts data collection and routine data analysis and documentation of data. Maintains laboratory notebooks. Works with Department Heads and Scientists to insure better practice sharing and implementation within the lab.

Physical Requirements
0-10% overnight travel required. Lab exposure may include hazardous chemicals and blood-borne pathogens.

Qualification

For T1D:

* A BS with minimum of 2-years of relevant experience. Relevant experience may be substituted for degree, when appropriate
* Experience working with mouse models in BSL2 conditions, administration of drugs via different routes of injection (including intraperitoneal, subcutaneous, and intramuscular), and tissue collection is required
* Strong technical skills, including cell culture sterile technique required
* Computer proficiency and the ability and desire to learn new software programs is required
* Excellent skills in collecting data and accurately maintaining laboratory notebooks required
* Basic understanding of immunology and immunological assays, including but not limited to immunohistochemistry, FACS, and ELISpot, preferred
For DKD:
* A BS with minimum of 2-years of relevant experience. Relevant experience may be substituted for degree, when appropriate
* Experience in tissue preparation for immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence and imaging required
* Experience in biostatistical methods a plus
* Experience working with and knowledge of mouse models, especially fibrosis models, in BSL2 conditions, administration of drugs via different routes of injection (including intraperitoneal, subcutaneous and intramuscular), and tissue collection is required
* Strong technical skills, including cell culture sterile technique required
* Computer proficiency and the ability and desire to learn new software programs is required
* Excellent skills in collecting data and accurately maintaining laboratory notebooks required
* Basic understanding of immunology and immunological assays, including but not limited to immunohistochemistry, FACS and ELISpot, preferred
