Scientific Manager of Translational Science

As a Scientific Manager of Translational Science in Waltham, MA , you'll play a pivotal role in channelling our scientific capabilities to make a positive impact on changing patients' lives. IMED (Innovative Medicines and Early Development) focuses on scientific advances in small molecules, oligonucleotides and other emerging technologies and drug discovery platforms across our focus areas.
AstraZeneca's vision in Oncology is to help patients by redefining the cancer-treatment paradigm, with the aim of bringing six new cancer medicines to patients between 2013 and 2020. A broad pipeline of next-generation medicines is focused principally on four disease areas – breast, ovarian, lung and haematological cancers. As well as other tumour types, these are being targeted through four key platforms – immunotherapy, the genetic drivers of cancer and resistance, DNA damage repair, and antibody drug conjugates, underpinned by personalised healthcare and biomarker technologies.

Requirements: 

Main Duties and Responsibilities 
In this role you will be a Project Coordinator responsible for:

•Technical and logistical lead for Foundation Medicine studies, numerous external pilots, bake-offs, collaborations, requiring strong influencing and communication skills
•Genomics Project Coordinator to TSS's consulting on pre-clinical and clinical studies
•Alliance Management leading interactions with dozens of collaborators and Contract Research Organizations (CROs) worldwide
•Working with Business Development, Procurement and overseeing TS Project Coordinator as needed to establish new working relationships
•Cross functional project support beyond TS developing strategies, overseeing generation and delivery of data to guide clinical and pre-clinical studies 
You will also be responsible for: 
Management of Translational Science Departmental Budget: 

•Driving human biological sample sourcing
•Leading new purchases, reagent spend
•Budget Management overseeing all U.S. Translational Science Oncology Genomics spend
•Overseeing charge-back for project work 
Lab Operations and Technology Development 

•Developing a strategy for aligning to GLP-like practices
•Operational Lead for optimization/validation of various technologies via pilot studies
•Continual expansion of internal lab capability, technology development, optimization and validation of next generation sequencing methods for oncology projects
•Managing lab operations including maintaining instrument compliance, calibrations and overseeing capital investments
•Overseeing SOS (Sample Operations Specialist)
•Guiding and communicating changing project priorities and timelines to lab scientists 
Communications 

•Leading lab tours, external interactions and outreach 
Translational Science Leadership Support 

•Directly support the VP of Translational Science
•Developing strategic presentations for essential meetings
•Remove obstacles impeding our ability to deliver life-changing medicines by leading improved ways of working, people development, improving employee morale, visibility and communication
•Liaising with translational science strategist for early stage drug project work 
Essential Requirements 

•BS/MS in genetics or cancer biology
•5 years pharma experience
•Proven communication and influencing skills
•Highly developed problem solving and risk management skills
•Highly developed collaborative working skills
•Ability to act as an external ambassador and to influence external organizations to enhance the image and reputation of AstraZeneca
