Scientist, Downstream Process Development

A new opportunity has opened up for a Scientist, Downstream Process Development to work within our Ottawa, Canada based R&D team.  You will be involved in downstream process development activities for our enveloped Virus Like Particle (eVLP) platforms. The Downstream Process Development team is responsible for the development and implementation of downstream processing methodologies and analytical procedures that can be easily transferred to a cGMP Manufacturing site.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan, develop & support scalable purification process by evaluating novel and advanced technologies for our eVLP platforms
  • Lead efforts to evaluate and optimize different membranes, resins and filters as part of the purification development activities
  • Serve as subject matter expert for the design of process development studies, data analysis and interpretation of data
  • Support scale-up of the manufacturing processes and technology transfer to VBI’s partners and CMOs
  • Employ quality by design principals to perform process characterization studies such as impurity clearance, process limit evaluations, and identifying operational design space
  • Support the training of lab staff on downstream purification equipment
  • Prepare and review study protocols, reports, test-methods, SOP’s, etc.
  • Perform duties in compliance with VBI’s employment, health & safety, and labour policies, procedures and regulations
  • Effectively collaborate with a fully integrated team to facilitate the success of projects
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • PhD in Engineering (Chemical or Mechanical Engineering), Biotechnology, Biochemistry or another related field (Biology, Protein Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry)
  • AND,
  • 3+ years of experience in downstream process development, chromatography and filtration methods (chromatography, tangential flow, ultrafiltration)
  • OR,
  • MSc in one of the above noted fields and 5+ years related experience
  • Experience in viral clearance techniques, process scaling and technology transfer
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture in suspension bioreactors is considered an asset
  • Able to plan and manage competing priorities effectively and adapt to changing priorities
  • Strong analytical, organizational, time management and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication skills with the proven ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Prism
