Scientist I/II, Neuroscience/Cell and Molecular Biology
AbbVie established the Foundational Neuroscience Center (FNC) in Cambridge, MA to investigate the fundamental biological mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease. AbbVie scientists are using this knowledge and state-of-the-art technology to develop transformative therapeutics to slow disease progression.
We are seeking a highly motivated, BS or MS level scientist to join the Proteostasis therapeutic area. The candidate will take a hands-on role in a highly collaborative environment across multiple teams investigating the fundamental biology behind the accumulation and clearance of misfolded proteins in Alzheimer's disease. This individual will design, perform and analyze experiments to support the early drug discovery efforts to identify and validate novel drug targets including assay development and validation, characterization of model systems including human iPSC-derived neuronal models and analysis of tissue samples.
Key Responsibilities Include:
• Contribute assay development expertise to multiple project teams focused on proteostasis biology to support high throughput and phenotypic screening efforts.
• Assist in generating stable and inducible expression of transgenes in mammalian cells, use siRNA and CRISPR/Cas9 to modulate gene expression in cell culture, maintain iPSC-derived neuronal cells.
• Conduct experiments using technologies such as luminescence, BRET/FRET, photoswitchable fluorophores, HTRF, AlphaScreen and proximity ligation to detect and quantify protein turnover in cells.
• Use state of the art instruments including flow cytometer, high-content imager, fluorescent and confocal microscopes.
• Execute on planned experimental design, collect data, interpret/analyze results and present conclusions.
• Work diligently and efficiently to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Read and apply relevant scientific literature.
• Develop and master new skills as needed to address emerging biological questions.
Requirements:
Position will be hired based on level of experience.
Basic Qualifications:
• B.S. with 5+ years or M.S. with 2+ years in biochemistry, cell biology, neurobiology or a similar discipline.
• Previous experience in biotech/industry and/or with neurodegenerative diseases.
• Proficiency with standard molecular, biochemical and cell biology methods including: conventional cell culture, transfection, transduction, CRISPR/CAS9 gene-editing methods, cloning, lentiviral production, and flow cytometry.
• Experience with iPSC culture and neuronal differentiation & maintenance is a plus.
• Familiarity with high-throughput cellular & biochemical assay development and analysis of large data sets including high-content imaging data.
• Aptitude with basic statistics and software packages such as GraphPad PRISM.
• Demonstrated ability to learn, understand and master new experimental techniques.
• Developed organizational skills to multitask and work within timelines.
• Established scientific writing skills, record keeping abilities and clear verbal communication.
• Strong interpersonal skills and eagerness to work within and across teams.
