Sequiam Deploys BioClinic(TM) to Stellenbosch University in South Africa
Sequiam Corporation (OTC Bulletin Board: SQUM – News) announced today that its wholly-owned subsidiary Constellation Biometrics Corporation ( www.constellationbiometrics.com ), a premier provider of biometric technology and services, has delivered its BioClinic(TM) biometric clinical diagnostic management support system to the Stellenbosch University in South Africa ( http://www.sun.ac.za/index.asp ). BioClinic(TM) is designed to ensure that patients are correctly identified and correlated with their laboratory test samples.
The Stellenbosch University Department of Medical Biochemistry has initiated a project using BioClinic in a clinic in Lawaaikamp near George in the Southern Cape Region of South Africa. The aim is to use “real time application of molecular epidemiology tools” to improve the management of tuberculosis patients. This will provide laboratory test results, which comprise a more comprehensive and more accurate sample analysis than routine laboratory procedures with a faster turn-around time. In addition, samples and data will be collected for research purposes. To facilitate the identification of all clinic visitors, including the tuberculosis patient, everyone entering the premises will have their fingerprints biometrically recorded using technology and software designed by Constellation Biometrics.
Gian van der Spuy, Department of Medical Biochemistry, University Stellenbosch said: “We are excited about the prospect of using BioClinic in an innovative way to enhance our work. This will help with the correct identification of patients, the correlation of patients with their samples and together with molecular investigations will provide information regarding the possible nosocomial transmission of tuberculosis at the clinic. Data is stored in a MySQL database backend, which is synchronized daily with the main database at the University. The project is headed by Professor T. Victor.”
Shane Griffin, Managing Director of Constellation Biometrics South Africa said: “This is a wonderful and exciting project, as it is a first in South Africa where biometrics is used to assist researchers in gathering accurate diagnostic research aimed at tuberculosis. Moreover the same concept would be rolled out to the rest of the country after the initial project concludes. The success of this project could have enormous positive consequences in the diagnostic collection of data and its accuracy.”
