Socket Delivers Industry’s First Cordless Bar Code Scanner with ‘Fuzzy Logic’

Socket Communications, Inc., the Mobile Connection(TM) Company, announced the industry’s first cordless laser bar code scanner with ultra-high performance Fuzzy Logic scanning that enables easy reading of damaged, poorly printed and hard-to-read bar codes. The Cordless Hand Scanner combines the power of laser bar code scanning technology with the convenience of Bluetooth(R) Wireless Technology in a single compact, light-weight product that has the maximum possible cordless range. This unique device enables a wide range of current and future scanning applications, such as medication administration, pharmaceutical inventory control, electronic medical record control, and other mobile data-collection activities.

“Today, bar code scanning is the most efficient way to collect data from a mobile computer and is 50 times faster and 10,000 times more accurate than manual data entry,” said Jack Brandon, Socket’s senior business manager for scanner products. “With the addition of Fuzzy Logic technology in our cordless scanners, customers can be confident in capturing information from even the most difficult to read bar codes.”

The Cordless Hand Scanner is the latest addition to Socket’s existing scanner product line, all supported by Socket’s proprietary SocketScan(TM) keyboard emulation software and software developer’s kit (SDK). Accordingly, hundreds of Socket’s registered developers can immediately take advantage of this new cordless scanner without changing their existing applications.

The new scanner has the ability to automatically enter scanned data into Windows, Palm or Symbian applications on a PDA, mobile phone, laptop or desktop up to 300 feet away — all without the hassle of cables or the awkwardness of a protruding antenna. It supports all popular bar code symbologies including UPC/EAN/JAN, Code 39, Code 128 and RSS-14 and is 2005 Sunrise Date compliant. The device uses minimal power, so it can be operated for hours without having to recharge batteries. Additionally, a stylus tip built into the device handle allows the scanner to double as a stylus for PDAs and other touch screen devices.
