SPECTRO GENESIS ICP Spectrometer: Analysis of Waste Water by ICP OES

Spectro Analytical Instruments, a Division of Ametek, has introduced a new low-cost but powerful Inductively-Coupled Plasma (ICP) called the GENESIS, specifically targeted to the environmental laboratory and waste water analysis markets.

Spectro’s GENESIS is a compact, bench-top ICP having tremendous analytical power of larger ICP units on the market but with a price tag of just under 60-K, complete with autosampler, computer, software, installation and training.

The GENESIS covers a wide wavelength range from 175nm to 777nm, inclusive, using 16 solid-state detectors in a time-tested Roland Circle-type design for increased stability and unsurpassed analytical speed, i.e., one sample (no matter how many elements) every 15 seconds).

Various Software packages are available which offer pre-programmed methods for waste water, soils, organics, lube oils, etc.

Due to its unique optical simultaneous design, there are no moving parts to wear out and the system offers a patented feature called “I-CAL” which continually monitors various instrument parameters and automatically compensates for changes using an “I-CAL” standard.

Offered in both Axial and Radial torch configurations with 1700 watts of RF power, Spectro’s GENESIS is one of the most powerful and rugged state-of-the-art ICP instruments available.

In 1991 the European Community has decided to oblige all member state cities, depending on their wastewater organic load, to be equipped with wastewater treatment plants before Dec. 2000 (load greater than 15000 equivalent-inhabitants) and before Dec. 2005 (load greater 2000 equivalent-inhabitants) respectively. The physico-chemical and chemical characterization of wastewater at the inlet (influent) and the outlet (effluent) of the treatment plants is an effective way to control the process efficiency and to verify the final quality of the effluents.

The new SPECTRO GENESIS inductively coupled plasma (ICP) optical emission spectrometer with axial plasma observation has all the required analytical capabilities in terms of sensitivity, precision and accuracy to perform the analysis of waste waters in such an environment. It features a Paschen-Runge spectrometer mount, employing the proprietary Optimized Rowland Circle Alignment (ORCA) technique. The wavelength range between 175 and 777nm can be simultaneously analyzed, allowing complete spectrum capture within 3s. Independent from the number of lines and elements an analysis (including 3 replicates, pre-flush, and method rinse) can be performed in less than 4 minutes. Utilizing SPECTRO’s patented “Intelligent Calibration Logic (ICAL)”, which normalizes the wavelength and the intensity scale by automatically monitoring the state of the optical system, master methods are transferable to individual instruments. All relevant ICP operating parameters are software controlled, allowing easy selection of the optimum operating conditions.

The SPECTRO GENESIS offers a simple, fast, accurate, precise and cost efficient method for the analysis of waste water, determining trace, minor, and major elements with excellent recoveries. In conjunction with an AS500 autosampler, the SPECTRO GENESIS can be fully automated for the application.
