Sunquest and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Expand Long-Time Partnership

CHICAGO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Sunquest Information Systems, Inc., a market leader in laboratory and diagnostic information systems, today announced that the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC), a leading global health enterprise, has signed a strategic agreement enabling UPMC to expand utilization and deployment of the Sunquest laboratory information solutions (LIS) for an extended period of time. As part of the agreement, UPMC will extend the Sunquest system, already in 15 of its 20 hospitals, to additional sites. Additionally, after a successful pilot installation that resulted in eliminating laboratory specimen labeling errors, UPMC’s nursing staff will expand use of the Sunquest Collection Manager. UPMC’s long-term plans include deploying Sunquest’s LIS to all sites.

“The hospital laboratory is central to the diagnostic and care planning processes,” said Richard Atkin, president and CEO of Sunquest Information Systems. “Having the right laboratory information solution and technology partner are key to ensure smooth enterprise operations, optimal patient experiences, and proper utilization of healthcare resources. We are very pleased to be one of UPMC’s core technologies and that our 21-year partnership with this leading organization will continue to thrive.”

“Sunquest’s integration with our enterprise system, innovation in patient safety, and strong support of our organizational objectives are just some of the reasons that we consider Sunquest a strategic element in our long-term information technology plan,” said Jim Venturella, chief information officer of UPMC’s Hospital and Community Services Division.

The agreement was signed on February 28, 2009 for an undisclosed amount.
